Last
night, I listened to a conversation between two wonderful writers of children's
books: Michael Rosen and Phillip Pullman. Rosen has written 140 books, and he is
professor of children's literature in London. Pullman was knighted for his
services to children's literature. It was an interesting conversation. Pullman
learnt his love of words in a school in Wales. With right words the hairs on the
nape of the neck bristle! At Oxford University, Pullman attended one lecture.
He found it boring, so he didn't go to any more of them. They talked about
reading. If you want to be a writer, you must read. They both love stories.
G.K. Chesterton said, "Literature is a luxury: fiction is a
necessity." It is better to read a good story badly written than a bad
story written with skill. Their stories are good and skilfully written. We need
lots of good stories in Cornish. We have some, but we need more.
