Happy Equinox! Everything is changing. Yesterday the day was longer than the night. Tomorrow the day will be shorter than the night. The moon is waxing; soon it will be full. It looks very big and bright tonight, behind the trees and clouds. The trees are increasing too, bit by bit, day after day. At first they are small, then they are too tall and have to be cut lower. Can you see the difference between these two photos (summer and autumn)? The electricity wire had to be made safe for the winter. There will be wind.

The air is dense with the sound of bees in the hedge. The hazel trees are overgrown with ivy. The ivy is in flower and the flowers are much loved by the wild hairy bees. How sweet these little animals are! The blackberries are sour now - nobody likes them.

The weather is turning. Gone is the the summer sun and the heat. Gone are the long days. We no longer need our summer clothes. We can put aside our lightweight cotton shirts and summer dresses and bring out our heavy jerseys,  our cardigans and other woollies. Soon we will be clad in waterproof coats and wellingtons (waterproof boots). They can be expensive, but they are better than wet feet.

There is a lake in Stithians. It is a reservoir, with fresh water for all the people in the surrounding countryside. It is less than half full. We must be sparing with our water usage. Spring and summer were dry, drier than usual. There was not enough rain to keep the reservoir full, and all the rivers are low as well. Stithians Lake is beautiful and popular for watching birds (e.g. waders). The ground was baked hard in the very hot summer and the grass died. Recently we had some rain and the ground and grass are recovering. Now the ground is soft enough for the moles to dig.

In his diary Richard Symonds wrote "deeber" for the English word "saddle". But what was his horse's saddle like? What is a saddle? A saddle is a seat for a horseman or horsewoman on the horse's back. Saddles are made by a saddler. It is a very old craft. They must be comfortable for the horse as well as for the rider, so they are stuffed, provided with padding. There's a framework too, called the "tree", made of strong wood (perhaps beech). This distributes the rider's weight on the horse's back and protects its spine. The saddle supports the rider. Without a saddle he could fall. Riding bare-back is uncomfortable and hard. Traditional saddles are made of leather. Modern ones could be synthetic. There are many types for different purposes. They can be very expensive, more than £7000 for the best.

What shall I write? What can I write? There's not a single thought in my brain! I don't have a plan. I am not inspired. The right words are not coming. Is there anything special about this day? In Winter 1943, in Old Cornwall, the periodical of the Federation of Old Cornwall Societies, a list of Cornish words was published. The time of publication was the Second World War; the list was from the English Civil War. I'm writing a story about horses, and I need several words. In my story there are some words in this list, though the spelling is different now. Richard Symonds was not a Cornishman, but he met Cornishmen at the Battle of Lostwithiel.

Jane Austen is a very well known and much loved authoress. Born in 1775, she did not publish her first novel until 1811. She died six years later. Sense and Sensibility was first published in three volumes, "by a lady". Now we can read the Cornish translation by Nicholas Williams in one book, published by Evertype in the past year. I'm going to read it with an on-line reading group tomorrow. I like this story. I read it when I was in school, and many time after that. I watched a version on BBC a long time ago. And there's a splendid version on film with Emma Thompson ha Kate Winslet. Now I see there is a new film. Could this Colonel Brandon be better than Alan Rickman?

There are still some blackberries in hedges, and it's still safe to pick them. The old people say, "Don't pick blackberries after Summercourt Fair", or "Don't pick blackberries after Michaelmas". That is more or less the same thing. The berries are small now and they are not as sweet as before. But they are okay to stew with apples. The apples are small as well. The fair will start on Wednesday, 23rd September. The last day will be Sunday 27th September, so it is a "long fair" (a long market). Its age is 792 years. Michaelmas will be Tuesday, 29th September. It was a traditional time to have fairs. It was a Quarter Day.

Early yesterday morning Truro was very busy, with a lot of people, young and old, wandering around and waiting. They were waiting for a half marathon race, more than five hundred (half a thousand) of them. 520 runners began running 13.1 miles, from Lemon Quay, around the city, and then to Porthkea, Playing Place, and Cowlands, before going back to Lemon Quay. Part of the course is uphill. There are several steep hills. The course demands endurance rather than speed. The winner's time was one hour and twelve minutes. My son took an hour more, but he is older.
