We are already seeing dead leaves on the floor under our trees. They have the colours of autumn, but it is not autumn yet. The weather is very dry, and the trees are suffering stress without enough water. They are losing their leaves early to survive. We had a nice spring with plenty of blossom, so there are a lot of little apples. They cannot grow large, because there is no rain. Birds are pecking fruits in the trees for moisture. They are thirsty. And some apples are rotting before they fall. We picked some apples, but there will not be enough of them for the winter. Never mind! There are plenty of blackberries.

August is the right month for gathering fruits from the garden and from the hedges. Some apples are falling to the ground already. Many apples are damaged, pecked by birds for moisture. Flies and bees and wasps like damaged apples. But there are enough apples left for me to stew with blackberries from the hedges. I would like to have some yellow plums, too, but they are gone. Perhaps they were stolen by birds or by squirrels. The squirrels have certainly eaten all the hazel nuts.

Still, I am thinking of Wednesday's solar eclipse. I should paint a picture of the odd light. I walked to the sea. Could I find a reflection of the sun in low water, on wet sand? The eclipse was of no interest to that dog. The children were playing in the sand and water without thinking about the eclipse. The little river had less water because the tide had gone out. Perhaps a kite was more interesting than sun, sea and sand to others.

Should I climb uphill to look? Should I go to the beach? What is the safest way to look at an eclipse? I do not want to go blind. Early morning, I can see the sunrise behind the trees in our neighbours' garden. It's a very beautiful time, with a golden light on everything in our garden. The shadows of our trees are very long on the ground. The sun is rising in the east and the shadows are running westward, towards the sunset. Except we never see a sunset in this garden, because it's behind the trees and a hedge and a hill. I'd like to watch the solar eclipse in the evening tomorrow. I should go to the beach. The tide will go out in the evening, so there will be enough room for us and many more. Our beach is very good for sunsets. Tomorrow will be different, I am thinking.

Today, I am looking at the compass. There are four points of the compass (four quarters). How do we know which direction is East? Look at any church. The altar is always in the east end. And often there is a tower (the belltower) in the west end for the bells. Each church is dedicated to its own saint. This is the church of St Nyulina. The name of the village in 1415 was "Eglosnyulyn". Now it is called "Newlyn East" - but why "East". There is another "Newlyn" by the sea, further westward. It is older than St Newlyn East. It was the first "Newlyn" in 1290. There was anchorage for many ships, a pool for the fleet, so "Lûlyn". That is not the name of some saint. There is a bus-stop, but Newlyn East is not by the sea and there is no anchorage for ships.

Yesterday was quite a busy day. We cleaned several bedrooms and prepared some food in the morning. After that, we went to the beach with our son and two grandsons. The children had lots of energy, digging a big hole, looking for crystals, going in the sea and building imaginative piles of stones. Would they balance? Porthtowan is a very good beach for smooth stones among the sand. Fortunately, the afternoon was not too hot for me. There were enough clouds in the sky and a gentle wind was blowing.

I didn't see the full moon in the night sky, but I could see a half moon beyond the clouds in the day a week later. I'm looking up today as well. In summer remember winter. High voltage electricity must be protected from  tree damage in storms. There are some trees (especially one hazel tree) that are too tall. Their branches are too high, too close to the electricity cables. These young men have come to cut them lower. Now we are ready for the wind!
