I've lost my camera! Where is it? I found it but then I lost it again. There were children here today, playing beautiful games in my garden, but I have no photos of them. We didn't watch the Olympic Games. What did we miss? There were many contests for individuals and for teams. I like unusual sports, though I am a champion in any one of them. There's fencing - I tried that. With a sabre, you can hit your opponent above the waist. I never tried pole vault, archery, beach volleyball or hurdles race. Perhaps my young grandson will do BMX cycling.

Storm Evert came in the night. There was a strong, noisy wind. Lots of leaves and lots of apples were blown down. I'll make an apple pie tomorrow. My daughter abandoned her little camping holiday one day early. Her family spent the night snuggly within four house walls. Some campers were not so lucky. Their tents were destroyed. Some people had to be rescued from yachts in the dark. However, the wind was good for drying washed clothes today.

A boring day was saved by a very interesting lecture in the evening. Thank you Ben Bruch and Joe Eska. The wonders of information and communication technology allowed me to listen to two men talking from different parts of America. They made an examination of a short letter from William Bodinar to Daines Barrington. Barrington was an upper-class gentleman with curiosity - were there any Cornish speakers left in Cornwall? Were there or weren't there? Did he have a wager? He heard Dolly Pentreath, so he won his bet. He didn't seek more information from Bodinar (or give him any money). What a pity! That was a lost opportunity. Bodinar was a fisherman. Was there a superstition among fishermen? He called himself "a poor man of the fish" - perhaps he didn't want to scare the fishes away. We have pictures of Barrington and Dolly, but there is no image of Bodinar. What a pity! He was not as well-known as Dolly. Was Bodinar an educated man? He never saw a Cornish book - but perhaps he could read English. The letter is probably a fair copy.

The Olympic motto is three words in Latin: "Citius, Altius, Fortius". This means "Faster, Higher, Stronger". What has happened in the fifth day of the Olympic Games in Tokyo? A woman from Hawaii won a gold medal for surfing. Higher or faster? Sadly, there is no surfer from Cornwall. Who invented surfing - Hawaii or Cornwall? However, one young man started his swimming career in Wadebridge and Bodmin. He is a member of the team who were winners of gold medals in the relay race (4 x 200m freestyle). Definitely faster! How about "younger" or "older". There are some very young contestants in table tennis and skateboarding (a new sport, on a skateboard) - they are just girls. There are some more "mature" contestants - experienced riders in the dressage event. They already have many medals. And what about "more beautiful"? Those dressage horses must be the most beautiful.

The house is very peaceful today - and that is strange! I am accustomed to noise and disorder. Today I can listen to music without interruption. Alternatively, I could watch part of the Olympic Games on T.V. There will be seventeen days of competition. Today is the fourth day. Does Great Britain have any medals yet? We have 375 athletes, but only some have competed thus far. This young team of artistic gymnasts won bronze medals. Here is a silver medal for the women's triathlon. And gold medals for synchronised diving (from a 10m high platform). And those are not all the medals.

There is peace and quiet today, because there is not a single child in the house! I can go for a walk with the little dog and gaze at the plants. There's a fast-growing shrub in my garden. The butterflies like the purple flowers, but there aren't many butterflies this year. I didn't plant it. The stalks are not strong, and the flowers are heavy. Half of the stalks have fallen down - it's very untidy. I cut a lot of flowers from the broken stalks and put them in old containers. There's a milk pitcher from Lake's Pottery in Truro (now gone). There's a green Cornish vase, the same colour as the leaves. There's a jam jar as old as myself. Each flower head has many little flowers. In the porch there's a pot with a melon plant. There are two unripe little fruits. But perhaps I can pick the cucumber and tomatoes soon. Someone could eat them - I can't myself (hard to digest!). And it's hard to find my beautiful flowers among the wild plants.
