There are already medals in the Games in Birmingham. Scotland is in 5th place (with 2 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze) and Wales is in thirteenth place (with 1 silver and 2 bronze). Northern Ireland only has one silver and one bronze, in shared eighteenth place. Scotland had success in the swimming pool and Wales and Scotland had success with cycling.

The Commonwealth Games has begun in England. More than five thousand athletes will take part in 280 competitions across nineteen sports in ten days. There was a splendid opening ceremony (with a symbolic iron bull) for introducing the city of Birmingham and all the athletes. There are many teams - all the nations home and away, The British Empire in past times. Here's the Scottish team and the Welsh team - but where is a team from Cornwall? We don't have permission. Perhaps next time. We would have lots of supporters.

It's a lovely day today. Let's go out. We can go to the cider farm on a bus. It's not far. We can take a ride with a tractor and look at some animals. Perhaps we could taste a drop of new cider. Here are the goats; there is a new kid with his mum. The boy can climb on a tractor. He can pretend to surf a big wave.

Dogs, children, cats and a guinea pig! Today was very busy! All of them wanted to eat lots of food, often. The puppy wants to chew lots of things that are not food - toys, cushions, slippers, the broom. Fortunately, the girls like playing with the dogs.

There is a new cuddly baby in our family. She has curly black hair. It shines like black silk. She has very sharp teeth and she chews everything. She is very fast and she tries to chase butterflies. Fortunately, she is not noisy. Her old friend likes to sleep, but he barks at the neighbours.

Do you like swimming? Do so like swimming in clean, safe water? Unfortunately, not all of the water in Cornwall is clean and safe. You could see warnings in many places. "Do not swim in a disused claypit." The water can be very cold and you could die from cold shock. If there is work in a claypit, there could be heavy machinery. "Swim between the two red and yellow flags." Perhaps, there are big waves or rip currents to carry you away in other places. Many people have drowned in sea, lakes, rivers, canals, reservoirs, claypits. It is dangerous, too, if the water is not clean. Waste water and sewage can pollute beaches and rivers. That can make you sick. But where is the nearest public swimming pool?

I heard very sad news today. Gone from us is an important Cornish man. It's Alan Kent's birthday today, but he died on Wednesday. There is great sadness. It is a great loss. He wrote many books about Cornish literature, traditions and identity, as well as stories, plays and poetry.

The afternoon was not too hot, so we went to the beach. There was a sea breeze. The tide was on the ebb: shells and crustaceans were exposed on the rocks. I could see many black mussels, a few limpets and barnacles, still damp from the waves. They close up till the tide is in again. They are on the cliff, very high - because the waves spray high. They are better in the shade. But I don't understand this. Why are parts of the cliff so white? Do you know?

Four elements: earth, air, fire and water. We are sensing all four of them at the moment. The ground is parched. The grass is yellow. But the barley is not yet yellow enough. On the downs the gorse is like a tinder box. There's smoke and flames in west Cornwall. The air is moving: the wind blows the flames and smoke. There's fire in houses too. The wind gives power to the wind turbines to make electricity. The wind gives power to the waves too. The sea is dangerous. Here's a rescue in progress.

What is this? The weather is cloudy. It will rain. There is rain now, blessed rain, welcome rain. It's good for the trees and grass, but the heat will return. For the moment the children can't play on the beach.

Hot weather is difficult for animals. There are many animals that cannot sweat. They can only salivate and puff to cool. They need enough water to drink. Animals do not have shoes. Hot roads and pavements can burn their paws. A fan can be very good for dogs and cats. And after a gentle walk, the horse likes to get a gentle shower from a hose.
