There are some changes. Fortunately, the weather is not so hot today. I can breathe! The sun is still shining, but the sky is cloudy and there is a gentle wind from the west. Unfortunately, I can't see the night sky, because of the clouds. The constellations are changing, I believe. We have moved away from Cancer and we are entering Leo. I like drawing Leo!

In Summer remember Winter. That's the Gwavas family motto. The summer months are June, July and August. In those months, some of the crops are gathered. Some are still growing, to be gathered in the autumn. Some produce is eaten now and some is stored for winter. Some produce is processed before storage, to make it last. All so that we and our animals can eat in the winter. But this summer is not very good. There is not enough rain. Some harvests are early and small. The ground is too dry. Some food will need to be bought from other countries. In winter there will be storms. Perhaps there will be no electricity. There are men still cutting trees, to keep the power lines safe.

Will this week be a good week? I have beautiful flowers from our friends, and the country has a new Prime Minister. The Government will bring an end to rough sleeping - according to our new Prime Minister. Will that be possible? It is certainly desirable.

I'm happy today. We had visitors. Many years ago my husband and his friend were researchers, in cancer research, in London. They were looking for abnormalities of chromosomes in tumours. Now they are retired and are separated by many miles. Today the friend came to our house. He was brought by his daughter and the daughter's husband in their car. The young man is a real stone mason. His experience is very interesting.

The weather is hot again - too hot and too dry.

Vegetation is turning yellow and rusty. It is not as green as before. But Cornwall should be green. We need green. It has many "green" places. Nicholas Smith painted the green "zawn" (with a blue sea).

The word GLAS has ancient origins. Travel several hundred miles further north to Scotland and you find Glasgow (recorded as Glasgu around 1136), meaning Green Hollow, which is similarly derived from the original British language of these islands.

Here are some Cornish place names containing “glaze” or “glase”, meaning GREEN (ref. Craig Weatherhill).

We can only guess at the early pronunciation of “GLAS” in an open syllable, but the later English spelling system shows us the pronunciation by the 16^th Century.

What is 'wildfire'. There is no single official definition. They are large outdoor fires. So, it is St Swithin's Day today and it is not raining. According to the legend, we will have forty more dry days. We do not need a legend for that news! We have a long-range weather forecast, by scientists (meteorologists). We need rain. We would like to have some rain.

Every country has a special day. Sometimes it is the feast of a patron saint, for example St Piran's Day,  5th March, in Cornwall. Sometimes, it commemorates an important historical event, for example Bastille Day, le quatorze juillet, in France. On that day, the poor people stormed that fortress prison in Paris. The Revolution began the French Republic (without a king) in 1780. Cornwall is not a republic, not yet, but we don't have a fortress prison!

The weather is too hot for me and for the dogs. However, I can sweat and I can take off some clothes to feel cooler. A dog cannot do that. A dog must pant. It needs enough water. A dog should find a cool, shaded place, away from the sun.The old dog likes to be in the shadow of the house, under a lot of leaves. I started to cut his hair, but it is not finished yet. The young dog can't be quiet. It wants to play all the time. It lies stretched out on the cold slates, waiting for a ball or some other toy. It went to a woman in Newquay for a haircut. I could not do it myself.

Once upon a time, very, very long ago, perhaps twenty thousand years. there was an Ice Age. The greater part of the British Isles, though not Cornwall, was covered in deep ice. Cornwall was very cold and harsh, without trees, like Alaska or Siberia nowadays. The ice retreated. There were people eventually. How could they find their way around? They didn't have "SatNav". There were prominences, some eminences (high places), high land (not like the Scottish Highlands). They are seen for miles and miles all around. They help people get their bearings.  Sometimes, hill forts (or monuments) were built on them. And now there are plenty of trees. Now these hills have names:  Carn Brea (hill tor), St Agnes Beacon (tor at St Agnes), Caer Kief (treestump fort) .

At nine o'clock I began my journey for a meeting with friends. It was already hot. Caer Kief looked mysterious as I waited for a bus. There is slight haze on the sea too, because of the heat. The power lines are sagging - they have expanded. It is still possible for birds to sit on the sagging cables. Why are there so many? What are they doing? They were also there when I came home at half past four. They have a good view. Are they keeping watch?
