Animals must eat. One sign of life is the need for nutrition. Plants can use energy from the sun, but animals need food. The bee has a long tongue, to drink nectar full of sugar from the flowers. Bees fly in the air from flower to flower, but they stop to feed. Bats also fly in the air too, but they are hunting their flying food. They are very fast, they do not stop. I could see two of them in the evening. Some birds fly to my apple trees and peck the apples. The apples are very damaged. (That is good for the wasps!). Squirrels climb or jump to reach them. Sometimes I can see toothmarks. Squirrels want hazelnuts too. Can you see one?

Should I feel happy or sad, joyful or miserable? The world is slowly dying. We are burning coal, oil and gas, and making carbon dioxide. That is trapping the sun's heat. Everything is heating up. Ice caps are melting. There are wild fires. Many people are losing homes. Nature and wild life is suffering. Instead of working together and solving the problem, governments are waging war. That is sad. The temperature here is only 19 degrees. This is very comfortable. We had rain earlier. The wild strawberries and ferns are decorated in jeweled cobwebs. I have to smile.

Tonight, I'd like to see the full moon myself, but I cannot. It is too low in the south, and there are trees and hills blocking my view. It is a Buck Full Moon. Why "buck"? Because the animals are growing their antlers. Are "bucks" significant in Cornwall? 

These are place names regarding "deer (or red deer), "stag" and "stags", "hind" and "hinds", "roebuck" and "roe bucks" from Craig Weatherhill. There are some names in Old English but many in Cornish. Once upon a time there were many deer in Cornwall, I think. Deer were important. Rich people liked to hunt (and eat venison). There was a farm for breeding dogs. In Summer remember Winter. So, the roof of the big shed is finished (I hope). The rain did not get in, fortunately. But the little shed is beyond hope, beyond being saved. The floor is rotten and the door is broken. It is not safe, unfortunately. After the roof, we should think of other wood. The window and door frames need paint. Some paint is gone and lost. The roof is black, but the frames cannot be painted black. The window frames are white. After painting the wood, we must clean the glass. Low surfaces are the worst. "Don't paint", says the dog. "I want to play. Throw my ball for me."

"In summer remember winter." There is a lot of work to do in summer. "What work can you do?" (asked the farmer in JCH). "Every sort of work. (said John). Can you mend the shed roof? Certainly, with a ladder, paint and a paint brush. The shed should be waterproof before the arrival of all the rain in the winter. Is there enough paint? No. We need to buy more. Is the work finished. No. Another coated is needed.

Our lawn should be green with fresh growing grass. But it is not very grassy at this time. The sun is killing the grass. The grassblades are going yellow. They need rain. There is some green. The weeds are green. The lawn is a weedpatch, with dark green weeds and light green weeds. They are wild plants. Weeds have deep roots, to look for water.

I don't like dwelling in a city, among big buildings and lots of people. I prefer being among vegetation. But that is not perfect. There are little creatures in the surrounding countryside that are not seen in towns.This creature is a tick. They drink the blood of big animals, e.g. deer, sheep and cattle. They can also feed upon some small rodents. They are found in wet bracken, rough grassland and the edge of woods (and perhaps in my garden and the lane). This pest, the tick, found my skin.

There are some changes. Fortunately, the weather is not so hot today. I can breathe! The sun is still shining, but the sky is cloudy and there is a gentle wind from the west. Unfortunately, I can't see the night sky, because of the clouds. The constellations are changing, I believe. We have moved away from Cancer and we are entering Leo. I like drawing Leo!

In Summer remember Winter. That's the Gwavas family motto. The summer months are June, July and August. In those months, some of the crops are gathered. Some are still growing, to be gathered in the autumn. Some produce is eaten now and some is stored for winter. Some produce is processed before storage, to make it last. All so that we and our animals can eat in the winter. But this summer is not very good. There is not enough rain. Some harvests are early and small. The ground is too dry. Some food will need to be bought from other countries. In winter there will be storms. Perhaps there will be no electricity. There are men still cutting trees, to keep the power lines safe.

I'm happy today. We had visitors. Many years ago my husband and his friend were researchers, in cancer research, in London. They were looking for abnormalities of chromosomes in tumours. Now they are retired and are separated by many miles. Today the friend came to our house. He was brought by his daughter and the daughter's husband in their car. The young man is a real stone mason. His experience is very interesting.

The weather is hot again - too hot and too dry.

Vegetation is turning yellow and rusty. It is not as green as before. But Cornwall should be green. We need green. It has many "green" places. Nicholas Smith painted the green "zawn" (with a blue sea).

The word GLAS has ancient origins. Travel several hundred miles further north to Scotland and you find Glasgow (recorded as Glasgu around 1136), meaning Green Hollow, which is similarly derived from the original British language of these islands.

Here are some Cornish place names containing “glaze” or “glase”, meaning GREEN (ref. Craig Weatherhill).

We can only guess at the early pronunciation of “GLAS” in an open syllable, but the later English spelling system shows us the pronunciation by the 16^th Century.
