John Passmore Edwards was an important Cornishman, born in Blackwater more than two hundred years ago, in March 1823. His father was a carpenter, a brewer and a gardener. Threepence each week paid for school and extra tuition for the boy (tuppence for his brothers). He read everything. In the end he became a writer and the owner of a newspaper. Books and learning were very important to him. So he built libraries, institutes, museums and art galleries. He was a generous philanthropist. In 1892 he gave a convalescent home in Perranporth, for men to spend a period of convalescence after hospital and before going home. Nowadays the house is divided. There are twelve apartments in "Nampara Court". (The name is from the Poldark stories, written nearby.)

The sky is clear this evening, there are no clouds, and we can see the moon. It's not a full moon, not yet, but it looks full. It is waxing. It will be full on the first day of May, but will we see it? The night could be cloudy. Our shaggy dog is looking at something. Is he looking at the moon? Or, perhaps, can he hear a badger in the wood? He likes sitting in the dark.

This morning the air was full of noise of chain saws cutting some branches from tall trees near the power lines. Then the men were gone and there was peacefulness again. I could listen to the birds and look at my flowers. Unfortunately, I do not have any cowslips. Most of the primroses are gone but there are still plenty of blue bluebells. And what bliss! Other cuckoo flowers have arrived, pretty white flowers among the grass blades and plantains. They are called milkmaids in English.

How beautiful Cornwall is in April. There are cowslips everywhere today. We went to look at Perran Round and there were cowslips by the road and in the Round too. It was a Playing Place for a miracle play a very long time ago. Was there a play about St Piran himself? There is big space in the middle for a big crowd of people to watch the players on the high banks. There's enough room for lots of actors. One actor (or maybe more) was the Devil. There's a special place for the Devil in the middle of the circle. He could jump out of the "Devil's Spoon" and give everyone a fright!

What sort of handiwork are these? They are a type of needlework. They are not embroidery exactly, but there is some embroidery in them.
They are patchwork, patched with various bits of cloth. There are several words stitched on the patches: metal and names connected with mining. Some of the patches look old; they are stained (with tea or rust?). There are images of engineering: beam-engines, engine houses, a man-engine with miners, and a balmaiden.

We will have to come back another time. We had to while away the time till the next bus. We went to the library and found some books in the Cornwall section. There is an interesting wall-hanging on the wall.

Our lane is too narrow for the rubbish collectors' lorry. There is no room to turn. So we have to carry our bags to the road. Some neighbours use cars. There are red bags for washed plastic and metal (aluminium and iron). There are orange bags for clean cardboard and cards, and there are blue bags for clean paper. The black boxes are for glass bottles and jars.

Several men in the 17th Century and 18th Century translated God's Ten Commandments. Before that costly Holy Bibles in English were read in churches. Here are examples of the same commandment, regarding the 7th day of the week (Sunday/Sabboth).

Anhanow 1612

King James Version
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

My little grandson is "Taurus", but he is very "energetic" and "impulsive" like Aries. He likes to be "practical" but he is "impatient". Perhaps he was born under the wrong sign!

What sort of handicraft is this? It's a type of needlework. This is embroidery. My sister liked to embroider when she was young. She went blind and after that she could no longer do it. This is wool on canvas, many stitches. She was a marvellous stitcher. I like the goldcrests. My sister preferred the chickens. How many hens are there in the first picture, and how many little chicks? I can see thirty chicks, I think.
