This month is a short month. There are only thirty days in it, like April, September and November. Only February is a shorter month, even in a leap year. The other months are one day longer. In English, there is a rhyme to help children remember. We need something like that for Cornish. Who will write it? Certainly, June was the hottest month this year. Is it a record? Cornwall is a bit cooler than London! And, this morning, it is raining.

There will be a full moon in the night. I won't see it. The sky is overcast. The clouds came in the day. This full moon is called a Strawberry Moon. It's the season for picking strawberries! I can't see the moon, but I can find some tiny strawberries in my garden. They are small, but they are not the smallest thing in the garden. Look at these scarlet flowers among the grassblades. I don't know their name. But what is the most scarlet flower? Look at this one, this jewel, among the ferns. It was a present from a friend, so I do not know its name either. There is a red clover too, but this is not so bright.

My son had to dig a trench in his garden. He began trench digging by removing some soil. I took a pot of that soil for my garden, without doing anything with it. What  surprise! There were seeds in the soil, and nor I have one beautiful red flower. The snail is happy. There are tasty leaves for it to eat. It does not eat the leaves in the nearby pot. They are not so tasty, it seems.

Today I phoned two friends for long conversations. We are three old women, and we do not like this hot weather. Not at all! We are living in different parts of the country, but everywhere it is the same thing. Keep cool in the house, and use a fan, if you have one. Go out in the early morning if necessary. One friend is in the Isle of Wight. That's like Cornwall. My other friend is near London, far from the sea. She is in worse heat than Cornwall.

So, I can't go out in this heat. I won't chat with anyone in the street. Perhaps I could invite somebody to my house; somebody with a car. "Would you like to have a cup of tea? A drop of cold beer, perhaps? Can you stay for dinner? I have fish and chips (in the freezer). Or perhaps some salad would be better. There are tomatos and lettuce in the fridge."

It is still Speak Cornish Week, but I haven't spoken any Cornish today. What a pity! The weather is too hot for me and I didn't go out. I stayed in the house, indoors. Our house is cool enough. A butcher built the house as a store for his meat. The stone walls are thick and shaded. They are wonderful for tropical weather - for this heat wave. I won't be a piece of roast meat and I won't melt like butter.

Here we are in Speak Cornish Week! Did you speak Cornish this morning, or afternoon, or evening? There will be another chance tomorrow - and the day after tomorrow. You can say "Hello (joy to you)" to your family and friends. You won't see anyone tomorrow? Never mind! Say "May God give you a good day" to your mirror or your computer.

Happy Midsummer. It's the solstice. The day today is the longest and the night the shortest. In Penzance there is a Golowan (Midsummer or the feast of St John) to mark the middle of summer. There is a loy of music and dancing for several days. There are people disguised too. And there is a ceremony in the middle of summer for the Cornwall Gorseth with the Awen banner.

The last day has arrived of the sign of the Zodiac "Gemini, The Twins". Tomorrow will be the first day of the next sign "The Crab" or "Cancer". I like drawing. In the past I planned twelve designs for a zodiac calendar. The spellings are not all used now (they're not SWF). In the legend, the "twins" were boys - brothers, but I drew "girl twins" - sisters!

It is early summer and there is white clover in our lawn. The wild bees love it. I haven't found a four-leaved clover yet, but there are some very small toadstools among the flowers. They are no use to a bee. There are little red apples fallen to the ground under a young tree. The apples left in the tree will be bigger and better in the autumn. But this is not my best apple tree.

There are some words with a similar sound. They could be confused, for example "edhen" (bird) and "edhyn" (birds) and "eythin" (gorse) and "idhyowen" (ivy bush). We need a tongue twister.

Today, I am looking at small things in the garden. Big things are more obvious, but I must look for the small things. There are the summer fruits - wild strawberries, growing on a bank. A few are ripe, but most are unripe. Cultivated strawberries would be bigger. There are little animals hidden in my garden. There aren't any cuckoos, but here is cuckoo spit! There is a plant bug under the froth, eating the ivy's sap. This snail, on a fern (hart's tongue), is not protected by froth. It has a shell. Is there something else in this hole in a bank? Something alive? The hole is too big for a wild bee. It is too small for a rabbit. Perhaps there is a small rodent in it.

Boggy moor and estuary are peaceful,

so don't bark, Humphrey!
