There is a carol about the twelve days of Christmas. On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me a partridge in a pear tree. (This was probably "une perdrix" rather than "in a pear tree" - partridge in French or Latin!) On the second day he gave me two turtle doves. Today, the fifth day, I received five gold rings. In the interim, I got three French hens (or were they turkeys?) and four colly birds (perhaps blackbirds). It should stop now. These is no room for geese, swans, milkmaids, ladies, lords, pipers nor drummers.
