What is literacy? Are culture and traditions possible without literacy? What happens with languages if the people are illiterate? Does culture survive in spite of illiteracy? In Great Britain, nowadays, we use the Roman alphabet. Was there literacy before the arrival of the Romans? In Ireland and Wales there are about four hundred inscribed stones. The writing is in ogham script (pre-Roman). Before writing there was a strong oral culture. Bards and poets told many stories of gods, heroes and clans, with embellishments to flatter their overlords. There was no need to write them. Writing was for monuments and lists (things hard to remember). Then Christianity came - a "religion of the Book". Perhaps literacy and Christianity spread together. Scribes were important. But the biggest increase in literacy came with the invention of the printing press (too late for the Cornish language). But now we can "hear" some voices from time gone by. Thanks to the scribes.
