Yesterday,
we saw a painting by Frost. He was a recent modern artist. (He died in 2003.)
He said, "I like spirals because they're forever… They are always a growth
form. The aboriginals use spirals in their art and animals have spirals in
their movements … The whole thing is part of life." Other artists like spirals
too. Mary Martin made "Spiral Movement", a curved form, from
geometric wedges with straight edges. What a contradiction! But what is modern art or abstract art?
Picasso said, "There is no abstract art. You must always start with something.
Afterwards you can remove all traces of reality. There's no danger then, anyway,
because the idea of the object will have left an indelible mark." Ben
Nicholson wrote, "Realism has been abandoned in the search for reality: the
principal objective of abstract art is precisely this reality."
