It's World Book Day. Let's celebrate books. What is a book? What is the purpose of a book? What is a book like? Books can be full of words or wordless. They can be illustrated or entirely without images. The first writing was invented 2600 BCE, but that was on tablets of stone, and therefore they are not books. The oldest book (600 B.C.E) was made of pure gold, with six pages. Did that "book" tell a story without words? Was it fiction? The joy of books is in writing as well as in reading. My friends like writing books for children - books with magic in them. I wrote books for children - books with science experiments in them. A work colleague wrote fantastic poems. I also like very old, shabby books, perhaps a hundred years old, with discoloured pages. I still have some books I bought when I was a child or are inherited from old people.
