Yesterday I asked who made a certain footpath and where did it go. Today I would like to ask who planted all the trees there are around and where did the seeds or the plants come from. Some trees, such as oaks and hazels, are native - in Cornwall for a very long time. We see their names in many place names (and old family names - this gentleman is Alexander Pendarves) - e.g. Pendarves (end/top of an oak wood) and Presingoll (the hazel-trees grove). They are spread by animals (squirrels and birds). Acorns and nuts are very tempting. There are other trees that are spread by wind - they have winged seeds. One ash tree can start an ash grove. But there are many trees brought to Cornwall by Victorian collectors. The Treseder family of Truro were part of Australian and Cornish garden history. And the Lobb brothers went all over the world. Did this tree come from Treseder's nursery in Truro? It is old and its trunk is thick.
