Be prepared for the storm. That is the advice we are given. We could lose the electricity in the night, like in the last storm. What do we need? For light, we need lamps with batteries. We also have candles with matches to light them. The central heating will not work without power and we do not want to use the woodburner. There are two camping gas stoves in the cupboard. We can boil a kettle of water for a cup of tea and a hot water bottle.

It's windy today, very windy. It's a westerly wind. At last, the ash tree is losing its leaves. They are everywhere, in the launders (gutters) and on the glass roof. The evergreen trees and hazels are swaying in the wind, but they are not losing their leaves yet. Soon there will be a stronger wind. There is an amber warning for Cornwall. Storm Austen is coming on Friday.

Fortunately, there were festivals for bringing joy. And they still give pleasure to us.

Higher up, beyond those clouds, I can see a vapour trail of a aeroplane, flying towards the south. The vapour is being blown towards the west by a wind high in the atmosphere.

This is not wildfire! No. All the vegetation is too wet to burn. There is a bonfire in the next garden. It is not burning very well. The gardener is trying to burn a heap of weeds and branches cut from the trees (to protect the electricity). There are not a lot of dead leaves. There are red berries on the hawthorn, but the leaves in the trees are still green. I can't see any flame at all. There is a cloud of white smoke because the wood is too wet. The fire will not spread like wild fire. It won't jump the hedge to our grass.

I was surprised to see so many people in the village and on the beach. The majority of them, I think, were retired people. The children are in school. Sometimes in winter there are more gulls than people. Not everyone was old. We saw someone trying to do kitesurfing. But the surf wasn't very good - it was a bit messy. And the wind wasn't very strong.

"I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills." That is the first line of Psalm 121. The meaning of the writer was the hills in Jerusalem, but we have hills in Cornwall. We are not seeking help from the hills. We perceive our position by our hills. I see Carn Brea (Hill Tor) and I know this town is Redruth. I see Caer Kief (Treestump Fort) (or is that one Caer Dane?) and here I am in Perranzabuloe. We see St Agnes Beacon and we know the direction of St Agnes.

As we were coming home, the wind was blowing from the north - against us again, but there was no longer any rain. The sea was rough - a lot of surf. Without rain, we could see bits of colour in the hedge. Red and shiny - those are berries of holly and bryony.
