The last day of the month of January, and perhaps that means that the worst of winter is gone. The sun is higher and stronger and the days are becoming longer. Spring is in the air. I saw daffodils and pansies in a garden in Truro (grown by my husband's sister). At lunch time we went with her to the Red Lion Inn in Blackwater. They serve a very nice ploughman's lunch.

'Ello whei gweles an eythin war an menedh? Thew an flourys melyn pecar'a howlsplan war vagas. Ma flourys erel ewedh - le hewel, pecar'a scavyligyon, le liwüs, pecar'a bleujednow ergh.

At last! We had a lovely day. Where is the storm? It's gone, it seems to me. There were only a few white clouds in a blue sky early in the morning. And even in the afternoon the clouds were not full of rain. Can you see the gorse on the hillside? The yellow flowers are like sunshine on a bush. There are other flowers, too - less conspicuous, like wild arum, less colourful, like snowdrops.

We are expecting the third storm in six days. It's named "Ivo" by meteorologists in Portugal. (Cornwall is on the edge.) Today (or tonight) is the second new moon after the winter solstice, therefore we have a Lunar New Year. It's the Year of the Snake. Happy New Year to you all. (And Happy Birthday to my boy!) You could make more resolutions, or start a new plan. Will the year be lucky for us? There won't be damage from the storm. I hope! I should issue this promptly, before losing the electricity.

Fortüdnyes o vy. Et ow bôwnans my a wrüg obery warbarth gen pobel wheg en sciens ha tavasow - ha skientek ha skentel ens ewedh, leun a skians. Thera plesour et aga kescowethyans, ha my a wrüg desky meur ganjans. Ow howeth Ivor a dhescas biokemygieth, bes prydydh marthys o ev ewedh. Ev a scrifas vers ow tòchya mantedh bezoar. Martesen avorow my a wra y dreylya.

I am fortunate. In my life I have worked together with nice people in science and languages - and they were knowledgeable and talented too, full of wisdom. There was enjoyment in their company, and I learnt a lot from them. My friend Ivor taught biochemistry, but he was a wonderful poet as well. He wrote a poem about a bezoar stone. Perhaps I'll translate it tomorrow.

Anjei a venja helghy an taran - mons ow pònya adro dhe'n lowarth y whilas! Po nag eus taran mons ow whilas neppeth aral dhe helghy (heb cacha tra veth). Da ew genam an edhyn ha flourys, saw na venjama bos sqwithüs. Eus othom dhe nebonan a dhesky lies ger nowydh? Ew henwyn teleryow mater da? A ero whei gosowes ort an nowodhow war an radyo? I like to write, but what do readers want to see? Should I write of the weather? I heard two thunder claps in the night and today it's raining a lot. Do people like my animals? They would like to hunt the thunder - they run around the garden looking for it! If there's no thunder they look for something else to chase (without catching anything). I like the birds and flowers, but I wouldn't like to be tiresome. Does someone need to know a lot of new words? Are place names a good topic? Do you listen to the news on the radio? I'd like to get a bit of feedback. Here's a quote from the Bible: "I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness!"

Cornwall has a long coast, and that coast has many coves. There are lists of Cornish place names to be found with "Porth" or "Por" or "Pol" in them. The other half of the name is a description - sometimes of the vegetation found there. "Porth Lojowek" (now "Polly Joke" to locals) is full of plants. In the past, perhaps, there were many cornfields in Porth Isek (now Port Isaac). Is there fresh water (perhaps a stream) in Porth Helik (now Porthallack)? Willow trees do not like salt. Some names indicate animals rather than plants. Porth Reun (now Polruan) had seals, it seems (though now there are seals in other coves too).
