Yesterday was the birthday of Charles, son of Queen Elizabeth. He was born in 1948. But he only became Duke of Cornwall in 1952, when Elizabeth became queen. The young duke was only four years old. Before that there wasn't a Duke of Cornwall since 1936. A woman can't be Duke of Cornwall, therefore Elizabeth was never a Duke (or Duchess) of Cornwall. The Duchy was established in 1337, to provide an income for the heir to the throne (initially the Black Prince). In Cornwall there are signs of the Duchy all around us, in town, by the beach, on walls. Richard, Earl of Cornwall, was also Count of Poitiers in France. Perhaps the spots on his banner were peas (because “pois” is the word for “pea” in French). Do we see fifteen peas everywhere or fifteen golden bezants?
