The birds are hungry in cold weather. They need food. They need new water, too, because there is ice on puddles and bowls. The robin in the hedge asks very sweetly for oats every day. But there is competition. The robin has to eat quickly. Bigger birds and squirrels love oats as well. They come from the trees. There's competition between a squirrel and a wood pigeon. Who will give up? Sometimes there is a crow (or is it a rook?). She will fly away if she sees me. Jackdaws come and go quickly, too. Soon there are no oats left.

The weather is cold today, but there are flowers in my garden. I have a camellia bush full of pink buds and flowers. There was snow and hail yesterday, but they are undamaged and unblemished. There are pink Hosta flowers as well. There is still hail on the grass - and on these mole-hills. The animals are probably warm enough under the ground.

There is cold (sad) news. The weather is cold; there is snow in many places. It's not heavy on our glass roof. That is news of coldness. There is not peace around the world - that is cold news although the weather may be hot in some places.

Every year in St Piran's church there is a Christmas tree festival, before Christmas and a few days after Christmas, until Epiphany or Old Christmas Day (called "Hen Nadelik" by some people). Many groups in the parish decorate their trees and put them in the church. Money is collected for charity.

Our house is not far from the sea. But which sea? It's the Atlantic - the "Sea of the Sunset"/"The Western Ocean". Our weather comes from the west. Today, I saw this map for the first time. It shows shipping areas, and I can see that our weather will come from "Lundy". I shall pay attention to the forecasts for Lundy!

The full moon is rising behind the neighbour's tall trees on a cold evening. It's called a Wolf Moon, and it's a super-full moon! (Though there are no wolves in Cornwall.) There will be a frost tonight, I think. There's a lot of work to do this year. I'm not getting any younger. I must finish my books.

A happy New Year's Day to everyone. Did you see the arrival of the New Year with wine and fireworks? I watched fireworks in a TV broadcast from Australia - midnight in Sidney but afternoon in Cornwall. At midnight in Cornwall I was fast asleep! I didn't hear any fireworks.
