These plants have leaves shaped as hearts or kidneys, almost round, like those of coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara) or butterbur (Tussilago or Petasites sp.). But there are flowers too. The flowers are a wrong colour - and it is the wrong season. These are members of the sunflower family, with a lovely perfume. They are winter heliotrope (there's no Cornish name) (Petasites fragrans). The smell? Like cherry pie, vanilla, liquorice or aniseed - very sweet. For bright colours you should look at the trees.
