Learn Late Cornish Bit by Bit 82 (More About Time)

A Bit More About Time

We have had the odd mention of months of the year. Here is the complete list:

mis Genver                           January
mis Whevrel                         February
mis Meurth[1]                       March
mis Ebrel                              April
mis Me                                  May
mis Efen [2]                          June
mis Gorefen[3]                     July
mis Est                                 August
mis Gwedngala                   September
mis Hedra                            October
mis Dû                                  November
mis Kevardhû                      December

Traditional Cornish had no distinct word for date, so we have to approximate (the first example is preferred), e.g.:

Pana dhedh[4] ew hedhyw?           What day/date is it today?
Pandr’ew an jedh a’n jorna ma?    What is the day/date of this day?
Pandr’ew an dedhyas[5] hedhyw? What is the date today?
Pana vis o?                                      What month was it?

[1]  mis Merh in RLC
[2]  Middle Cornish Metheven
[3] Middle Cornish Gortheren
[4]  Pana in a question causes a soft mutation
[5]  This is a recent reconstruction based on Welsh and Breton; not recommended!
