In the afternoon I went to my friend’s house to take a drop of tea and practise our demonstration for next Wednesday. She will paint a picture for our art group and I will describe her procedure and equipment. She chose a photo in a magazine for inspiration. The canvas is 30cm high and 80cm wide, and already primed (prepared) with gesso (a type of white paint). She has limited colours (apart from white) – dark brown, two blues, two yellows, orange and grey. With a big paintbrush she spread bright blue mixed roughly with white for the sky and clouds. Dark blue for the sea, a bit of grey and a bit of white for shadows and crests of waves came next. Two yellows for the beach and a little dune, brown and grey for rocks. Then a lot of white applied with a knife made the surf on the beach and rocks. Did we need something else? Certainly. A headland in the distance, a bit of seaweed on rocks and a few dry plants on the dune. That’s enough.

Someone has written on a wall in Truro railway station. This May is an important anniversary for the station. 160 years ago the first passengers with tickets alighted on a new platform in a new station. The station today is the second building – it is a rebuild. But the station in this place was not the first in the town. Seven years before that there was another station in Higher Town, perhaps near County Hall (though that wasn’t there at that time). Nobody knows exactly where it was! There is a need nowadays of a bridge for people on foot from the road across the rails. This is Black Bridge, made of iron.

I am happy today. I wrote nine pages for my newsletter, I printed them, and I put some of them in envelopes. Most of them I sent by email. I’m happy as well because it’s a beautiful day, my apple trees are full of apple blossom and I can hear lots of wild bees. And there are lots of flowers.

Go away little cat, I must work! What is the work for today? I’ve got to write a newsletter for my art group. We had several interesting gatherings and one exhibition. There will be more gatherings and exhibitions. In the third week of May there will be an election for the committee. I need to write a lot of words! There are no new photos for today. These ones are old.

Today I will write about candles. Why? I saw flowers on a big tree, on a horse chestnut. The flowers are in shapes like candles. But that sort of candle is quite big. There are no candles as big in my house. There are only little candles; candles for birthday cakes, candles with scent, candles if there is no electricity. Candles can be made of beeswax (expensive) or paraffin wax (from oil, cheaper). In times gone by in Truro (on Lemon Quay) there was a little factory called Atlas Soap and Candle Works. Cheap tallow was used, fat from dead animals. What a whiff! Miners carried tallow candles.

A little job for today was to cut all the dead heads off the hydrangea. The dead flowers protected the bush through the winter, but now they are not needed. There will be no more snow or frost. I am very happy with this bush – I grew it myself from a small cutting. This lilac came from a cutting as well, a present from Aunty Ivy. The original bush was in Treyew Cottage for a long time. It’s not there now – County Hall is there instead. A little bird (dicky bird) is waiting all the time. It hopes for a bug.
