It's October and National Hedgerow Week - and we walked uphill to the fields. The day was very peaceful. There was no traffic noise in the fields. We stood and listened. Many little dicky birds were flying around in the air, from one hedge to another, chirping. But what was that sound? There is a deer farm nearby (for venison). I heard a stag bellowing. The fields are ploughed and harrowed, but there is a 20ft border left for nature conservation. There are still flowers growing - corn marigolds, campion, heartsease. And another bird noise - a cock pheasant in this paddock.

We have a new Duke of Cornwall. Will the new Duke be a good one? Does he know something (or nothing) about our country? Did the old Duke understand Cornwall? Was Helston, and the Flora, familiar to him? When is the Flora? According to custom, the Flora takes place on 8th May - unless that's a Sunday or Monday (market day). But next year the eighth day of May will be on a Monday. In the coming year the festival should be on Saturday 6th May. Is there a problem with that? Yes! The old Duke is now King Charles and his coronation will be on 6th May. Will he change his day? Will the Flora be a different day? Will people need to choose, go to a festival or stay at home and watch television? Helston or London, there will be people dressed up like May Day!

Ivy is growing in hedges, and that is good for wild bees (hairy bees). Flowers are finished in the garden but there are still some flowers in the hedge providing nectar and pollen. There's food in hedges for birds too. They will eat rose hips and berries if the ground is too hard to look for earthworms. Rose hips last longer than blackberries. Some blackberries are already mouldy.

Today begins National Hedgerow Week. Hedges are very important. They join different habitats, protect against pollution, help us in the fight against climate change. Hedgerows provide homes for 80% of our woodland birds. Other significant animals found in hedges are hedgehogs, bats, newts, dormice and butterflies. We must look after our Cornish hedges.

Sometimes there are no buses and we can't go to town. Perhaps the road is obstructed and the traffic must take a different route. (I saw a woman move the cones to pass, but that's not possible for a bus!) Sometimes a bus is delayed - there is a detour (because of major road-works). Sometimes there is no driver because of sickness. However, tomorrow there will be no driver on many "First" buses. Drivers are angry with the company. Shareholders received £500 million, but the company is  offering drivers only £12 per hour wages.

Sometimes I take a random photo. I have several photos of that kind. They are not connected. I saw a little slow-worm on the footpath - "it's lost", I thought. I put it in the hedge. I talked with several children today. They want to learn Cornish. They could learn many subjects in our language. There is more than grammar to be learnt. In geography, they could investigate the seven continents and the five oceans. In science, they could investigate three states of matter - solid, liquid and gas, and change from one to another. In music, they could sing lots of songs in Cornish - perhaps "ten green bottles".
