We are approaching the end of the sign of Scorpio tomorrow. After that it will be the start of the sign Sagittarius (the Archer). A scorpion is a real animal but what is an archer in the Zodiac? Is it a man or something different? The stars in the constellation form a centaur, half man and half horse, it seems. There are illustrations of centaurs. There are many illustrations of Zodiac signs. Some of them are very old. They are from every age and from every part of the World. Some are painted and some are printed. The Archer always has a bow (or crossbow) and arrows, so this is its symbol. The symbol for the Scorpion shows its tail.

Today is a special day in Truro. It's time to switch on the Christmas lights. Every year there is a parade of lanterns through the streets for “Truro City of Lights”. I could not go to watch the event this year, but I have found some old photos. I took these pictures eight years ago.The lanterns were made of canes or wires and special paper (it does not burn) to look like huge animals - a giraffe, a rhinoceros, a hare, dolphins, a squid, etc. That year the theme was wildlife, I believe. This year the theme is the history of the city. Tonight I saw a lantern on the TV that looked like the cathedral.

The sea was grey today and the sea was blue yesterday. It's the same word in Cornish but the colours are not identical. The words in English are different. Surfers are indifferent – they surf anyway. Birds are indifferent as well. For them food is more interesting. They are looking for a bit to eat everywhere. Some of them are unafraid and quite bold. This hawk sat on a rock near us yesterday. And the rook came near the bus shelter today.

We had a beautiful day today. We went to the coast and walked along part of the coastal footpath in sunshine. Now my face is sunburnt – unexpected in November. The waves here are beloved by surfers. We saw the old lifeboat station. It's not used nowadays. It had a very steep slipway down the cliff. We saw a white hut – a lookout place for a shoal of pilchards in the olden days. It was low tide, therefore it was possible to walk in the harbour.

A human brain is very strange. It does not like randomness. It tries to give meaning to everything we see or hear. It compares new things with previous experiences. What do you see here? Is it a duck or a rabbit? Can you see an old woman or a young woman? People looked at the stars and saw animals. This is the zodiac sign Scorpio. There are lots of animals in the sky! I was born under the sign of the fish. I have never seen fish in the sky. We can be deceived by our eyes and our brain. Cameras can hoax us as well.

It was showery today. We dodged the showers and walked around Perranzabuloe, across the churchyard, then all along a little lane, to the fields. There are some lovely toadstools in the churchyard – bright red and yellow. Do you like cabbage? This field is full of greens. It's a cabbage field. It's very green! We see the sea from this field. Era nei ow qweles pemdhek pesen en pub le po pemdhek besont owriek?

Yesterday was the birthday of Charles, son of Queen Elizabeth. He was born in 1948. But he only became Duke of Cornwall in 1952, when Elizabeth became queen. The young duke was only four years old. Before that there wasn't a Duke of Cornwall since 1936. A woman can't be Duke of Cornwall, therefore Elizabeth was never a Duke (or Duchess) of Cornwall. The Duchy was established in 1337, to provide an income for the heir to the throne (initially the Black Prince). In Cornwall there are signs of the Duchy all around us, in town, by the beach, on walls. Richard, Earl of Cornwall, was also Count of Poitiers in France. Perhaps the spots on his banner were peas (because “pois” is the word for “pea” in French). Do we see fifteen peas everywhere or fifteen golden bezants?

baner banner, flag
besca never, ever in the past (also bescath, besketh or bysqweth)

metêrnes queen (note that the first syllable has become more schwa than in SWFM myghternes)
pegans income (you can also use gòber)
provia to provide
yurl earl, count
