This hungry grey squirrel was lucky today. There were nuts and seeds for the birds on the wall. Why is the squirrel hungry? Because there aren’t any hazel nuts on the hazel trees. The silly squirrels knocked them down while they were still unripe! Does the animal have a stockpile for the winter? In summer remember winter! Do you have a stockpile for Covid-19? Nowadays we can put food in a refrigerator. Once upon a time every abbey and manor had their ice-house. Where did the ice come from? Winter was colder and hard. For five hundred years (more or less) there was a Little Ice Age. There was enough snow and ice to cut and keep in a little house under the ground (like a cave). That kept food fresh in the summer as well. Was there an ice-house in Cornwall? Behold “Jangye-Ryn”, a promontory with an ice-house, near Gunwalloe.
