What will we see today? Will there be neighbours for a chat? Hello Mocha! Sadly, Mocha can't answer, but he happily accepts a bit of bramble to eat. Winter has certainly started. Yesterday was the solstice, the first day of astronomical winter. Three weeks ago was the beginning of meteorological winter. Without doubt autumn has finished. The blackthorn is leafless, but there are still black sloes on the twigs. This hazel tree is already prepared for spring, even though it is only the start of winter. There are immature catkins (lambs' tails). And there's pink valerian in a hedge. Isn't summer completed? And water is bubbling out of the road. It will turn to ice in the next frost. Dangerous!

Happy (Winter) Solstice to you. Today is the shortest day of the year. It is the solstice - the sun is at a stand. It will not get lower in the sky, and the shadows will never be longer. (But there aren't any shadows today!) Tomorrow the day will be somewhat longer. The year is turning. It's time to say goodbye to the dark and the old year, and to welcome the coming of the light again. I lit candles, as is the custom. Come back O Sun! There are lights on my Christmas tree as well. It's better to look at them in the dark - there are reflections too. In the church there is a Christmas tree festival, with trees decorated by parish groups. St Piran never saw anything like this. Our neighbour has a traditional Cornish holly tree on her balcony, though there are not many people to see it.

It's not Christmas Day yet, but there are already Lenten lilies (daffodils) by the church. There's a lovely smell in the air from some winter flowers. The wind is blowing from the west, according to the weather-cock (but the weather vane isn't a cock). Westerlies are the prevailing winds in Cornwall. They are not too cold, but they bring rain. Today we watched the clouds as they moved from right to left across the sky. The trees in the hedge lean in the same direction. Some of the clouds carry rain. We were caught in a slight shower. After that we could see rain coming down on distant hills - at the same time as some of the sky was still blue.

Where shall we walk? That was the question yesterday. Nowhere. The weather yesterday was too wet. Would we like to walk to the fields today? The morning is beautiful. Probably that would not be a good idea because there is a bad smell in the air. We saw a tractor and cart tipping cow dung. So, wellington boots on feet, we walked away from the fields, across the water fallen yesterday. Is this a stream? It's a lane. What is this? It's a spring in a driveway. How deep is Bolingey Stream? It's 60cm - that's 20cm more than usual. In the end we could see the waves on the sea.

Christmas cards are coming. Is there a common theme in the illustrations? There are several birds. A robin is popular. Here's one of them looking at a donkey. There is Father Christmas with Christmas tree, a reindeer and a sack full of presents and little walking sticks made of sugar. His reindeer has a tartan scarf - is it Scottish? There are snowflakes everywhere. There are more snowflakes with a spotted fallow deer and her fawn. And there are more presents in a tree. I like two cards with a partridge (and a pear tree). One is made by hand. Dogs and cats are also popular, with trees, snow and presents. Sometimes there is a scene from the Holy Bible (the Three Wise Men) or the word "Peace" (and two more robins).

There are villains in this world. I admired the castle on Carn Brea from afar. It's a restaurant, but it's not open, because of the current pandemic. It's hard for the owners, because there aren't any diners. They have no income. And now they are victims of villainy. There was a break-in. Someone smashed a window, forced a door and robbed them. I'd like to go there and eat in summer. There's a lovely view from the window. Not everything is bad this week. Judy Hastings saw this angel on a rainbow in Truro.

I am not very energetic today! The weather is boring today. I walked for my health but I feel ill. Perhaps I've eaten something that didn't agree with me. But Christmas is coming and I should decorate the house. I found a box with an old Christmas tree in a shed, with lots of baubles. Unfortunately, I had to throw some baubles away. The "golden" ones had turned green. They are mouldy as well. They are not truly gold - they are coloured with copper. A chemical reaction made copper carbonate "verdigris". It's the same colour as "malachite", but it's not so beautiful. The tree isn't real either. It's cheap iron and plastic - and I had to build it. The decorations will have to wait until tomorrow. It will look lovely from a distance - and nobody is coming close.
