There was a world-famous author living in Padstow and Little Petherick more than a century ago. (She died in 1923.) Have you heard of Nellie Sproggett? She's not famous nowadays. Perhaps you know the names Nellie Cornwall or Enys Tregarthen. It was the same woman. Visitors came from America to visit her. By the name "Nellie Cornwall" she wrote eighteen books for young people - moral, religious tales. Some of them were taken overseas (perhaps by miners). "The Maid of the Storm", published in1900, is now in the National Library of Australia. As "Enys Tregarthen" (the name is a mystery) she wrote about The Little People, all sorts of sprites. There is a biography by Dr. Simon Young and she is in an exhibition in Cornwall Centre. The Cornish language was not dead in her lifetime. You can find some words in her stories, e.g. ugly/cruel.
