Engineer to the rescue! Our Internet was weak and our telephone was not working at all. He had to check several wires, There was a bit of corrosion in the copper wire. And "Perhaps", he said, "you had a lightning strike." All is mended now. We have faster speeds. They are not brilliant but they are better.

There are rich people in our world and there are poor. That is not a new situation. Voltaire, the French writer, was born in November 1694. He said, "The comfort of the rich depends on an abundant supply of the poor." That was true in the eighteenth century and it is still true in the twenty-first century.

Do you like watching fireworks? Do you have any fireworks tonight? Perhaps you are going to a public display. Perhaps you went last night. Animals don't like fireworks. I have two dogs in my house. They are my daughter's dogs. It's quiet here, quieter than in the town. The dogs are happier here. We can hear the sea and we can hear owls, but the fireworks are in the distance. The dogs are not frightened. There is a full moon. Fireworks are beautiful, but the moon is even more beautiful.

Pete Seeger wrote the first three verses of this song in 1955, inspired by a Cossack folk song. Joe Hickerson added the final verses in 1960 to make it circular. The melody is an Irish tune. Here's a Cornish translation. (Not word-for-word.) Seeger wrote many very good songs in his long life.

Early in the morning the air was quiet and it was possible to hear the sea in the distance. There was sun and there wasn't any wind for a short while. Later, clouds covered the sun and the wind got up. I couldn't hear the sea any more, there was only the wind in the trees. After that the rain came, with a vengeance! In Falmouth, the water was running in the street. "There will be more rain tonight, with thunder and lightning" warned the radio. Perhaps it will be better tomorrow. We need to clear leaves out of our launders - they are choked.

The Council of Europe first thought about protecting national minorities after the War in 1949. Finally 22 member states were signatories of the Framework and it became functional almost fifty years later. The Welsh, Scots and Irish were protected. Cornish people still had to wait. Then, in 2014, the Cornish were recognised, by the Government of the United Kingdom, as a national minority - with the same status as our Celtic cousins. But there's no funding for our language and we do not have our own parliament. We do not have a national television channel. And, sad news, the BBC has a plan to "reduce" Radio Cornwall - our "national" radio. Some staff will be redundant or redeployed. Westminster does not want to support Cornwall.

This month is called “Dark Month”. It is the first month of the traditional Celtic year, and the first month of the dark half of the year. Therefore we can use the name “Winter's First Day” for today. Yesterday was the Eve of the First Day of Winter – a sort of New Year's Eve. The year began with the arrival of darkness. It is celebrated with lights and disguise. It is time to remember our ancestors as well. Today, it's All Hallows (All Saints Day).In Poland the day is a bank holiday. The people visit the graves of their families with flowers and candles.
