April is an interesting month in my family. For example, my mother-in-law was born in Treyew in Truro - 105 years ago on this day. She had two sisters, one older and the other younger. Two of them never went far from Truro but the youngest travelled to Africa with her husband. There was great sisterhood between the sisters and all the sisters-in-law. Where is their house in Treyew? It's no longer there. It was demolished to make way for County Hall. Perhaps the foundations are under the staff carpark! The owls are gone from the chimney too. There was a well for water in "well field" near the railway. (It's the field by "Fox Corner".) Water for County Hall comes in a pipe.

Happy Easter. Today was not a quiet day. There was great excitement. In the morning we needed to hunt Easter eggs in my garden. Easter Bunny didn't have many chocolate eggs this year (because shelves in the shops were empty). It doesn't matter, there were coloured plastic eggs in a drawer (from last year). The little boy searched on the slide, in a tree, among the primroses and rocks. There was only a single sweet in each egg, even so he still ate too much sugar! Then there were more visitors and more hunting - and consumption of chocolate before lunch. All activity was in the garden with social distancing. There were several tears. "The puppy has stolen my sausage." "The puppy stole our ball.".

Today we needed to walk to the village. Some medicine was necessary from the dispensary. The weather was very nice and there were many people about - walking with dogs and children, cycling and horse riding. The village was full of people on foot, cars and lots of gleaming motor-bikes. The unnecessary shops were still closed. It's not possible to buy nick-nacks! Nobody needs trinkets and souvenirs yet. You can buy pasties - ten of them for £28 in the butchers, but £2 dearer by the beach. Pasties are vital in Cornwall! One ice cream parlour is still closed, but you can get an ice cream with your pasty or fish and chips. The pub is closed till May. And this carpark is closed too.

I am happy. Yesterday evening we were in Mount Hawke doctors' surgery for our second Covid jab. Soon I can see all my family without being anxious on account of the disease. Meanwhile I can talk with them on a video-call. I can see their faces and hear their voices. Christiana Jacka was not so fortunate. Her son Alfred was a miner in Montana and communication was by letter. She could only write to him. She never saw his home. We know that he received letters, because one day (27th October, 1890) he was in a list in a newspaper - regarding letters not collected from the post-office in Butte. He died the next year in February. Was there an accident in the mine? No. His death certificate says cause of death was typhoid infection. A nasty sickness is caused by nasty bacteria in polluted water. Mines were not very clean in those days.

What is the day today? It's April Fools' Day. The first day of the month of April is always April Fools' Day. But this year it is, also, Maundy Thursday, the day before Good Friday. Did anyone try to play a trick on you this morning? My husband tried, but I was not deceived! The weather today was very lovely and the hedges and gardens are full of spring flowers. There are plenty of yellow flowers - celandines (stars of the spring or eye plants), daffodils (Lenten lilies), primroses. And, of course, there is always gorse. Do you prefer mauve flowers? There are lots of violets. But they are not sweet violets, so there is no scent. There's an appearance of snow on some trees - the blackthorn is in blossom. I walked twice today - once to take a photo for tomorrow and again to meet my granddaughter's bus. The sheep was curious to see me again.
