There was awful weather again, therefore I didn’t go out. I haven’t seen the writers’ group in Falmouth for a long time, but today we had a conversation on Zoom. Unfortunately, some of them didn’t know how to do it. So, we couldn’t speak to them. No matter, it’s better for me than travelling by public transport. Tam hasn’t written anything recently. She is busy scraping barnacles off the hull of her boat. (It is on land, in the boat yard, for the winter.) Peter is writing about a little airfield in the War. Warren is re-reading and revising his big book. It’s a family saga – a long story. Angie has a new magic book – “The Enchanter’s Child”. It has a beautiful cover. There will be a second book in February. Susie has a new book too – another book for children. It’s called “The School for Nobodies”. I should write faster.

The sun was quite hot this morning (for the time of year), and there was no wind. The sky wasn’t exactly cloudless, but neither were the clouds too thick. I saw white vapour trails, three vapour trails, from the east towards the west. Where have they come from and where are they going? Newquay Airport air-terminal closed several days ago for passenger airlines – nobody can travel. It’s still available for emergency aircraft. And the local airfield’s little planes don’t fly so high. There’s a plan for a new development in Newquay – a spaceport! Would you like to be a space traveller? There are plans for Scotland as well.

I’d like to have a rose bush with purple flowers like this. It’s quite a large prickly shrub. The stems and buds are hairy – it looks like moss on them. The scent is super. It was bred in 1855, in France, but it is named after a Cornishman, William Lobb. That man was a gardener and plant hunter on behalf of a plant nursery in Exeter. He spent many years overseas and died in America, in 1864. Here’s a man called William Lobb, but it’s not the same man. He wasn’t a plant hunter, though perhaps he was a gardener. He was certainly skilled with a shovel – he was a labourer on the Cornwall Railway, a “packer” of ballast. He died overseas as well, in Australia, in 1920.

The world is full of signs, more signs than usual. I can see two signs at the same time – a road sign and an estate agent’s signboard. It’s true – a ruin is for sale – but is it buyable? Two miles from here there are more notices by the church. It’s a sad thing – there are no services in November. And there are more notices on the parish board. The Countryside Code: Respect other people; Protect the natural environment; Enjoy the outdoors.

Today was a day full of contrasts, of things mobile and static, of things in the air and on the ground, of fast things and slow things, of big things and little things. This little white snail was on a stalk. Is it alive? Is the shell empty? It does not move. I saw several birds in a field – gulls, a solitary crow and a magpie. They didn’t move for a long time, but in the end they flew away. The huge wind turbine’s sails turned in the wind, making electricity. A helicopter flew above us. But more interesting was a large number of birds flying all around. Is it a migration? What kind? Birds of a feather flock together. They are all the same. Perhaps they are starlings. They are gregarious birds.

I have to walk every day. Sometimes I go uphill and sometimes I go downhill. Today I did both! From Quarry Road I can see the sea. It is quiet and grey today, because there is not a lot of wind and there is not a lot of sun. There’s no surf for the surfers. The year is just about over for surfing. The golf course is empty. There’s not a single person on the dunes. Perhaps all the golfers (m& f) are indoors. It’s the start of the farming year this month, with shorter days. There’s a field full of sheep here. There’s green colour or red colour on the backs of most of them. The rams have run with their wives! There will be new lambs in April.

Remembrance Sunday in a time of Covid. This day is not like past years. In the past there was a crowd around every war memorial. In Truro soldiers in military uniform marched to the cathedral, supported by men, women and children in school uniforms. Everyone wore hats. Sometimes there was rain and they needed umbrellas. Today there was a need for social distancing. Small groups laid wreaths, but there were no big crowds. In a nearby churchyard there is a corner for gravestones of soldiers and sailors. There is a small cross with a red poppy in front of each one. Each stone shows a name and a regiment. The exception is a stone for the Great War. There are two nameless men – both are unknown sailors.
