Are you near Padstow today? Are you going there this week? You could see an art exhibition. There are many exceedingly good pictures. There are some framed images hanging on the walls and there are some more set on small easels. Most of the pictures are painted on paper or canvas. There is a little bowl made of wood and some works in glass. Not all the pictures are framed and they are in browsers. There are cards as well, in a rack. And what are the subjects? You can see the sea with waves, the coast with rocks and engine houses, harbours, lighthouses and the beach. There are landscapes with rivers, waterfalls, streams and bridges. I see some places I recognise; St Ives, St Michael’s Mount and Truro. Flowers and animals can be seen as well; a fish, a cow and a leopard.

Buds appear in April; buds on trees and buds on many wild flowers. There is an old saying predicting the weather in summer. If the oak is out before the ash, then we’ll only have a splash. If the ash is out before the oak, then we’ll really have a soak. The buds on an oak in my garden are very small. Perhaps the summer will be wet. There are buds on the bluebells (cuckoo flowers) as well, but there are no cuckoos yet. There are buds on a cherry tree and a plum tree. Will I have fruits in summer?

There is a new beginning today and there is an end as well. Today was the last day of the school term. Tomorrow will be the first day of the school Easter holidays. There was only a half day in school today, so I made bread with my grandhildren. They like playing with dough even if the bread isn’t much good. My art group’s exhibition will start tomorrow. Today the easels for the pictures, and other equipment, needed to be taken to Padstow for setting up. The A-frame needs a new poster (we are no longer in August).

It’s a memorable day again. Thank you, Mr. Taggart. Who is Mr. Taggart? He is a skilled surgeon in Oxford. Sixteen years ago he operated on my heart and saved my life with new blood vessels. So, I am only sixteen years old! I will die, because I am not immortal, but not yet, I hope. I don’t like hospitals. I have seen too many of them. In the Easter holiday, three years ago, my shoulder was pulled out of its socket by our dog, pulled and smashed. I had to stay in the hospital in Truro for several days. I demanded to be discharged for our Golden Wedding! Easter can be a hard time. I should take care.

Do you look at roofs? Or are your eyes always looking downwards? Roofs can be new or old, and made of miscellaneous materials. This little church has a very new roof. The roof is not very beautiful but it will keep the congregation dry. I like a scantle slate roof. This one is in St Agnes. Every slate is small. You need a skilled craftsman to make a new one or to repair an old one. New or old? These gulls don’t care a bean. There are not enough cliffs nearby, so they are happy to sit on a roof, any roof.

Today is a special day for me. More than half a century ago I was married to my Cornishman. We met one another in a laboratory in a big London hospital. There were not enough jobs in Cornwall in those days. We were very young – and now we are very old! He had black hair and now he is a man with white hair. My hair has changed as well. Our faces are wrinkled and withered and we are heavier (too many pasties and cream!). My mother-in-law was raised in a cottage in Treyew near Penwethers (1327 top of place of streams). The cottage is gone now and New County Hall is in its place. My marriage and New County Hall are the same age!

Ma lavar coth adro dhe’n gog; “En mis Ebrel, hei a vedn dos. Nena en mis Me hei a vedn cana oll an jorna.” (Thew ev rim en Sowsnek.) Bes nag eus gwelys na clowys genam cog veth nanj ew lies bledhen. There is an old saying about the cuckoo; “In April, come she will. Then in May she will sing all day.” (It is a rhyme in English.) But I have not seen or heard a single cuckoo for many years. There are many flowers growing in April and May with “cuckoo” in their names. There are dead-nettles and marigolds (dialect “maligogs”). Early purple orchids are Orchis mascula and bluebells are Hyacinthoides non-scriptaIn dialect, primroses were also called “cuckoos”. There is cuckoo-pint in English. Bluebells are starting to flower now. Their flowers hang from their stalks on one side. The flowers are longer and darker than those of Spanish bluebells.
