Ma lies telher gleb en Kernow, saw gleppa ew Goon Brenn avel pub radn Kernow aral. Ma’n ûhelha glawcodh recordys dhe Carn. Carn ew an gleppa telher oll.
There are many wet places in Cornwall, but Bodmin Moor is wetter than every other part of Cornwall. Caradon Hill has the highest recorded rainfall. Caradon Hill is the wettest place of all.
Rag fra ma mar veur glaw? Ma lies cloud. Ma gwens dhort an west, a-dreus dhe’n mor, leun a ethen dhowr. Ma’n gwens na ow metya gen gwens aral dhort ternewan deffrans. Mons ow sqwacha warbarth! Ma cloudys na ell gwaya, commol en bond. Henn ew “linen keskeveryans”. Lies cowas ell codha en cost bian.
Why is there so much rain? There are a lot of clouds. There is wind from the west, across the sea, full of water vapour. That wind meets another wind from a different direction. They collide! There are clouds that can’t move, a band of cloud. That’s a “convergence line”. Many showers can fall in a small area.
Bes rag fra glaw a wra war an menedhyow? Drefen bos “cressyans orograffek”. Ma’n ayr leun a ethen dhowr a res mos emann rag tremena an menedhyow. Ma va ow treylya yeyn. Nei a wel cloudys drefen bos glouth. Nena glaw a wra! Dres an menedhyow ma skeus glaw. Segha ew. Nag eus ethen dhowr lowr gerys e’n ayr.
But why does it rain on the hills? Because of “orographic enhancement”. The air full of water vapour has to rise to cross the hills. It gets cold. We see clouds because of condensation. Then it rains! Beyond the hills there is a rain shadow. It is drier. There’s not enough water vapour left in the air.
