2020 Day 312

By my faith! I say an advertisement for this ruin. It is advertised as a “barn” for conversion. Planning permission was given, very quietly, during lockdown in July, in spite of objections from locals. You can buy it for £150,000. Would you want a residence between the road (Bone Mill Road) and the embankment of a dismantled railway? There’s a little river by the bank as well. In the past the river provided power to the bone mill. Would you want to live in a house where the bones of dead horses and cows were ground up? There’s a lot of work to do for a house with one bedroom! And there’s only three years to start – then the planning permission is over.

Is today a typical autumn day? Certainly, it is not like a summer’s day or a winter’s day. The weather is very windy, with strong gusts. We walked in the fields and it was hard for me to stand upright. We had a lovely view of the sea. As we walked home, I saw my washed linen fallen down. The support had snapped in the wind. It doesn’t matter, it’s dry! The leaves have blown away from many trees. Some trees are already bare. These are not leaves in this tree. A flock of rooks flew there - and then straightaway to the next tree. The lovely russet leaves of the oaks are still on the branches. The ash tree has lots of "keys".

It’s dark outside at the moment. I can hear fireworks somewhere, in a garden, though I can’t see anything. Dogs aren’t happy. I can hear barking.  Who can remember that the reason is treason? There was a Gunpowder Plot in 1605. The Catholic conspirators wanted to blow up King James in the House of Lords when he opened Parliament in London. Thirty-six barrels of gunpowder were found. There’s no display this year, because of COVID-19. I remember beautiful displays in past years.

I woke up to see sunshine. The sunrise was sparkling on the dew-wet blades of grass. Will today be a lovely day? It wasn’t a lovely day for this broken-down coach! What a lot of smoke. This hungry grey squirrel was lucky today. There were nuts and seeds for the birds on the wall. Why is the squirrel hungry? Because there aren’t any hazel nuts on the hazel trees. The silly squirrels knocked them down while they were still unripe! Does the animal have a stockpile for the winter? In summer remember winter! Do you have a stockpile for Covid-19? Nowadays we can put food in a refrigerator. Once upon a time every abbey and manor had their ice-house. Where did the ice come from? Winter was colder and hard. For five hundred years (more or less) there was a Little Ice Age. There was enough snow and ice to cut and keep in a little house under the ground (like a cave). That kept food fresh in the summer as well. Was there an ice-house in Cornwall? Behold “Jangye-Ryn”, a promontory with an ice-house, near Gunwalloe.

Theram ow predery a Van Gogh arta – Nos Sterednek.

I looked at the sky more than three times today. Was the weather dry? I wanted to walk out of the house for some fresh air. I heard a sound, like drumming. Hail! There were lots of hailstones on our glass roof. The hedge was distorted by the hailstones and through the water running down. I thought of Van Gogh and his wavy brushstrokes (Cows in the Meadow). I didn’t see the full moon the day before yesterday, because of clouds, but it is clearer tonight. I can see the moon beyond the trees, and several stars as well. And is that a planet? I think of Van Gogh again – Starry Night.

What can I write today? There’s nothing different in the weather. There’s wind and rain and sun all mixed. It’s the second day of the dark half of the pagan year. What can we expect? The horse chestnut here lost its leaves in the wind, but there are no conkers. There is rain on the sea but the sun shines on the golf-course. There will be restrictions on Thursday, so there are lots of golfers. After Wednesday, the golf course will be empty, I expect. There’s a lot of water on the road. Is that rain? No, it’s not rain. Is there a spring in nthe road? There isn't. Somebody is emptying his garden tub with a hose pipe. The pharmacy dispenser phoned – I must wait for my medicine.

Happy All Saints’ Day to everyone! A rare phenomenon happens every nineteenth year. That is a “blue moon” (a second full moon in a month) on Halloween. That has happened yesterday, and previously in 2001. The next occasion will be 2039. The moon is not really blue. I didn’t see the moon last night – it was too cloudy – so I didn’t take a photo. No matter, there are lots of famous pictures of nights with a moon and stars. Picasso (1939) painted “Night Fishing at Antibes” – you can see a full moon in the sky. It’s not blue! Forty years before that (more or less) is Rousseau’s painting “The Sleeping Gypsy” – another full moon. And Turner’s “Fishermen at Sea” was a century previously. And two centuries before that we find "The Flight into Egypt" (by Elsheimer).
