Once upon a time there lived in our lane a butcher named May. Therefore, there is no surprise to find old bones, perhaps a hundred years old, in the hedge. This bone looks like a stone. There is calcium in it, but it is not a mineral, it's not a calcareous rock. It's a knuckle bone, I think, from a leg of some big animal. All the meat was gone a long time ago.
