Through the Middle Ages, the greater part of the farmed landscape of Cornwall was divided into strip-fields. The strips of land were shared by several farmsteads – to vary the crops, and save the land. Some place names demonstrate that. Strip-fields began to be enclosed in the thirteenth century, but the names persist. And sometimes we can see a remnant of the banks in a big field.
