Today was a day for family. The weather was splendid – sunny and hot enough. It was a good day for a barbecue (for grilling food on a little fire) and eating in a garden. We ate a very good lunch. Aunt, great aunt, uncle, great uncle, mother, grandmother, grandfather, great-grandmother, niece, great-niece, nephew, boyfriend, girlfriend, husbands, wives, brother, sister, sisters-in-law and more – we were all there in seven people. Two old men, one young man, two old women, two young women and one little boy sat down to eat, drink and chat. I admired the fruits in the garden – they are bigger and better than mine! And the apples have not been ruined by birds yet. The little boy was amused by soap bubbles. And the bees were happy with the flowers. Oops! I can't count. There were eight of us.

Children must learn to eat without help. First they eat with their two hands. This child likes to nibble sweetcorn (maize). “Would he like to go to the beach?” we wondered (asked ourselves). So, we walked down the hill to the village. The beach was very busy, but we found a space on a dune. “What is this?” thought the little boy. “It's sand,” said his mother. “Don't eat it. And don't rub your eyes.” But he didn't want to play with the sand. He preferred the umbrella.

It's a lovely day today. There isn't any rain. I didn't look at the cattle – they were lying yesterday. We sat on the lawn with our granddaughter and her son. He's learning to walk and he already knows how to crawl very well. He wants to play with a dog's toy. You are not a dog, little one! Don't bite it. Later I cut several apples. Were there little worms in the Garden of Eden? There are lots in my fruit. I have to throw a lot away.

The sky is as grey as ashes and cloudy. Are those clouds full of rain? The cattle are lying down on the hill. That is said to be a sign that there will soon be rain. Autumn is coming. There is only one month until the September equinox. These blue flowers are turning purple. The trees are full of fruit. Much of it has fallen and been damaged by birds and wasps. I must pick apples and plums or sloes.

They did come again – the little, noisy army. The weather today is splendid; bright and hot. The children ran around with their plastic guns and threw themselves on the ground. Children cannot keep their clothes clean. Look at those knees! There will be peace in the garden tomorrow, there will be no more mock battles, no ambushes. They are going to visit their other grandmother and grandfather.

Youthfulness and beauty in my garden; young people came and they found a little beast. I don't like nettles – they can sting. But they are a favourite food of some caterpillars. Here's a red and black caterpillar – it's the child of a red and black butterfly, that is a red admiral butterfly. There's only one, sadly. The caterpillar is on a nettle leaf; it's not doing anything but eat. The children are more energetic. The little girl likes jumping on a little trampoline. But here are some weapons – they are for the boys. They like to run all round the garden – and to shoot foam bullets at one another. Their mother runs as well, and the little girl pretends to be a tigress. Games are hard on knees. They will come again tomorrow.

The sky is blue. Why isn't it white? Sunlight is white. Air scatters light, so today we are only seeing blue. There is no air on the moon. Therefore there is no blue sky there – it has a black sky. The sea is blue as well. The sea reflects the sky, or perhaps the sky is the mirror. Air is not blue in reality, and similarly water is not blue. The sunlight does not reach every part of the cliffs. There are deep holes in them - old mine workings. They are very dark. We see them as shadows. The cliffs are reflected in the water and the shadows are reflected as well. The sky above the saltings, near Hayle, is grey. It is not blue – it is grey – with a big thunder cloud. The water looks grey as well, and there are big shadows.
