The Solar Eclipse above Stonehenge. I saw this image on Facebook. Sorry, I don't know the photographer. I couldn't take a photo like that. It needs a static (stationary) camera in one place, taking several shots with regular intervals and a special filter. On the beach I could see the sun with my glasses. The sky did not turn dark, but it was like evening. The birds were confused but it was very beautiful. Unfortunately, my camera is not working today.

Yesterday, the beach was very, very busy. There were people in their holidays and local people, like us, who wanted to watch the solar eclipse. When we had arrived it was high tide, the tide was very high. There were waves splashing our feet. We crossed a little wet bridge across the little river to reach the big beach. We found a patch of sand by the little river. The sand was full of people with shelters, from sea to the dunes. We were all waiting for the eclipse.

Everything today is about the sun and the moon. There will be an eclipse of the sun by the moon. What time will that be? What time will be the best to see it? What place will give the best view? Should I climb uphill to look? Should I go to the beach? What is the safest way to look at an eclipse? I do not want to go blind. There is a colander (a bowl with holes) in the kitchen, or I can make a pinhole camera with a box. So, I was taken to the beach, and my daughter-in-law brought special glasses.

Early morning, I can see the sunrise behind the trees in our neighbours' garden. It's a very beautiful time, with a golden light on everything in our garden. The shadows of our trees are very long on the ground. The sun is rising in the east and the shadows are running westward, towards the sunset. Except we never see a sunset in this garden, because it's behind the trees and a hedge and a hill. I'd like to watch the solar eclipse in the evening tomorrow. I should go to the beach. The tide will go out in the evening, so there will be enough room for us and many more. Our beach is very good for sunsets. Tomorrow will be different, I am thinking.

Today, I am looking at the compass. There are four points of the compass (four quarters). How do we know which direction is East? Look at any church. The altar is always in the east end. And often there is a tower (the belltower) in the west end for the bells. Each church is dedicated to its own saint. This is the church of St Nyulina. The name of the village in 1415 was "Eglosnyulyn". Now it is called "Newlyn East" - but why "East". There is another "Newlyn" by the sea, further westward. It is older than St Newlyn East. It was the first "Newlyn" in 1290. There was anchorage for many ships, a pool for the fleet, so "Lûlyn". That is not the name of some saint. There is a bus-stop, but Newlyn East is not by the sea and there is no anchorage for ships.

Gerva rag hedhyw Vocabulary for today

clegh (pl) bells < clogh (m)
clehta (m) belltower
compes (m) compass

lû (m) fleet
qwarten (f) compass point, direction
sacra to dedicate > (va) sacrys
savla buss (m) bus-stop

Yesterday was quite a busy day. We cleaned several bedrooms and prepared some food in the morning. After that, we went to the beach with our son and two grandsons. The children had lots of energy, digging a big hole, looking for crystals, going in the sea and building imaginative piles of stones. Would they balance? Porthtowan is a very good beach for smooth stones among the sand. Fortunately, the afternoon was not too hot for me. There were enough clouds in the sky and a gentle wind was blowing.

Here follow some pre-SWF versions in Late Cornish produced by Richard Gendall and Neil Kennedy:
