From 3rd to 9th May, it's Deafness Awareness Week. Deafness and hearing loss are a hidden disability. How can people without hearing take part in conversations? They need to be lip-readers or use sign language, or both. Can the deaf learn Cornish? Everyone has difficulty chatting in lockdown, with a mask around their face. There are special masks incorporating a transparent panel. They can enable a view of the lips. Of course, we don't want to hear every man! Perhaps we should all learn some signs. "Thank you". "Please".

Do not mow your lawn this month. The group "Plantlife" is urging gardeners to stow our mowers and give them a rest for four weeks. There's a need for more flowers among the grass for early bees and other pollinating insects. Some flowers are short, close to the ground and unpretentious. Some others are taller and bolder, but the insects need all of them, short and tall, for nectar and pollen, before the arrival of summer flowers. An unmown lawn can feed more bees. Clover feeds the ground as well.

Pick a random word and research its possibilities. I received a bottle of Russian vodka from a friend. (That's very good for a sore throat!) There is a picture of a brown bear on it. I will choose "bear". The Cornish word is derived from the Latin "ursus/ursa" or, perhaps, the French "ours". In the past there were lots of bears in the Northern Hemisphere. They are found in stories in many languages. Sometimes the bears and she-bears are alarming, and sometimes they are gentle. Children like soft teddy bears. Do you recognise these flowers? Allium ursinum or "bear garlic". In many languages their names mention bears. In Cornish it's only wood garlic or wild garlic. Perhaps we did not have bears in Cornwall.

The afternoon is hot, and I am full of apathy and fatigue. (Is it possible to be full of something as negative as apathy? My head is empty!) I have to write something, but I have no ideas. I need to be a borrower of ideas from other writers. In 1906 Elizabeth Holden published "The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady". It had charming water colour paintings of birds and flowers. In May she saw a chaffinch nest, hawthorn blossom and wild hyacinth. Suzy Sharpe (www.suzysharpeartist.com) produces a blog every month, with paintings and poems, "Tales from Hillside Farm, and Bird of the Month". April's bird was a young gull. I shall borrow from myself as well. I wrote more lessons for children, with every type of weather. "Clip Art" is very useful for illustrations - clouds, sun, wind, rain, snow, hail, fog, etc. Perhaps I could find some photos - clouds above the sea and fields.

This day was a very strange May Day. It is not possible to meet in big groups for celebrating. We can't dance in the street or around a maypole. Perhaps next year. I didn't go out today, although the weather was fine. I have the common cold and hay fever too. There's a lot of tree pollen in the air. I'm sneezing all the time. My nose is red and I am using a lot of handkerchiefs. I have laryngitis - my voice is not strong. Our friend Dan was very different yesterday. What a magnificent voice! He sang in an opera about Schubert. That poor man (Schubert) was sick and he was going a bit mad.
