Is there anything interesting regarding this day? Well, 48 years ago, in 1972 the British Parliament voted to join the European Common Market. And now we are quitting Europe. About four hundred years ago, in a country far away across the Atlantic Ocean, Myles Standish was elected as the first commander of the Plymouth Colony. Nowadays he has many descendants. Perhaps there are some in Cornwall! Meanwhile, in the 17th century here's a map of Cornwall. There weren't many big towns.

I can't remember such a wet February. Don't visit us at this time without wearing waders. The weather isn't cold today but I remember a colder February. Two years ago there was snow. There was snow that March as well. The fields were white but the snow wasn't deep and it didn't last long. I had a dog then. I no longer have a dog, sadly. The old dog died and is buried in the garden under a plum tree. However, whatever the weather might be, the daffodils bloom. "I don't give a damn!" they say.

I didn't want to do anything today. I was tired. The little boy slept here last night - and he wouldn't go to bed early in the night or stay in bed late in the day. I wanted repose (and I felt lazy)! There was terrible weather - behold Storm Dennis. Water, water everywhere. We didn't need to go shopping today - our cupboards are full of food. I didn't take any photos at all, but I need some lovely photos of the sun. I didn't see any sun today, sadly. I found photos of sunrise and sunset. I like a dramatic silhouette.

I tried to translate Tennyson's poem about the snowdrop. I have kept four stresses per line (I think), but rhymes were too difficult!

Many, many welcomes,
February fair-maid,
Ever as of old time,
Solitary firstling,
Coming in the cold time,
Prophet of the gay time,
Prophet of the May time,
Prophet of the roses,
Many, many welcomes,
February fair-maid!
To Wordsworth, another poet, a snowdrop was a "Harbinger of Spring". And to some animal a snowdrop is something to eat!

The night was very windy but the little wood by the stream is sheltered by the hillside. Nevertheless, there is broken ivy fallen on the footpath, my shortcut. A greater consequence of the wind can be seen by the sea. The carpark and the road by the beach are messy. There was a very high tide in the early morning (half past six). There's a green tractor near the bar, ready to clean the beach (but there's not enough beach yet). Little birds like the rubbish - they look for food in it - here's a pied wagtail. However, salinity (or too much water) is not good for earthworms. This poor worm in the bus shelter is dead - drowned.
