Do you always have meat in your pasty?

Do you always have meat in your pasty?

Was there meat in traditional pasties in the past?

And what was the meat like?

Nowadays there is beef in a meat pasty, but perhaps not every

housewife had beef.

Many households had a cottage pig, and  people in the countryside

could catch rabbits.

Poor people could sprout (dialect cheeny or chitting) barley for a pasty

filling.

There is potato, turnip and onion in pasties as well (or, instead of

onion, leek or ramsons were used).

In Cornwall there are many small roads, narrow roads. Nowadays there are wide vehicles. The roads in old settlements and in the surrounding countryside were not made for wide traffic. Sometimes there's a need for one-way streets because there's not enough width for two cars (or anything bigger) to pass. It's difficult for buses if there are parked cars or a parcels van. Rubbish collection day is a further problem. Dustcarts are slow and they stop frequently.

Today it is the day for little things. At quarter past nine an oil lorry brought 600 litres oil for the boiler. Now we won't shiver in cold weather. My drawing of a Celtic cross is finished. The original design can be seen on a mediaeval incised stone in a museum in Scotland. It's called the Ulbster Stone. It's a continuous line as a symbol of eternity. The days are still short here but the sun is bright today. Last night in the night there was bright moonlight, though there was only a half moon. The sun is bringing the flowers forward. Already there are long catkins on one hazel tree by the lane (other hazel trees still have short catkins). There's a new red flower in a camellia.

The colour for today is yellow! As I was going along the road to the bus stop in the morning I saw lots of yellow things – and more as I came home. The colour can be vivid – sometimes that is for high visibility. It's a warning – do not come near. I am not pleasant (the sewage lorry) or I do not want to be injured by your car (the woman and her dog with matching jackets).Yellow can be more subtle and something of beauty. There are lots of gorse flowers already and, here and there, a few celandines and daffodils.
