De Merher, pajwora warn ügens mis Genver

Eus redyes genowgh an novel henwys “Noor ha Sooth” (“Gogledh ha Dyhow”)? Whei wrüg y redya? Bes peneyl? Ma dew novel gen an keth hanow. Have you read the novel called “North and South”? You did read it? But which one? There are two novels with the same name. One was written by a woman in the 19th century and the other was written by a man in the 20th century. There is 127 years between them. Are they very different? There is a love story in both, and there is conflict between north and south. The older book is set in England in the time of the Industrial Revolution. There are disputes between employers and employees. There are riots. The more recent book is set in America in the time of the Civil War. The northern states want to abolish slavery. The southern states want to keep slaves.

The weather this very night is windy and somewhat wet. The dog had to go out into the garden, and he came home with wet feet. There’s a big moon in the sky: big but it’s not full, not yet. It will be a “Wolf Moon”. There are no wolves in Cornwall, but I sometimes hear a vixen. There are stars in the sky, but I can’t see them without glasses. Can you see "Aquarius”? I have four relatives born under this Zodiac sign; four birthdays in fifteen days – two sons, one niece and one sister-in-law. And I can’t go out to buy cards and postage stamps!

Thera othom a veyn moy rag agan arres. Alja trònk-carr drehedhes agan lowarth? A via an vôwnder re ydn arta? Sowena! Ma pemp hûjes sagh leun a veyn dhe nei. More stones were needed for our drive. Could a lorry reach our garden? Would the lane be too narrow again? Success! We have five huge bags full of stones. The lorry was big, but it wasn't too big for the lane or the gate. It was not big enough to bring five bags in one trip. It brought three bags and went back for two more bags. Every bag was too heavy for one man, but a lorry has a hydraulic crane to pull the bags out, one after the other.

Here are two books from my shelf. The surname, "Stevenson", of the authors is the same, but the initials, R.L. and D.E., are different. Is there a link between these two books? Stevenson is a surname from Scotland. The two writers were born in Scotland, into the same family. Men of the family were civil engineers and lighthouse builders. But R.L. was a sickly boy and D.E. was a girl. Robert Louis is familiar to us as the author of "Treasure Island" and other stories of adventure and mystery. Here's a translation in Cornish by Nicholas Williams. But R.L. died young, two years after his cousin Dorothy Emily was born. She had a long life and she wrote more than forty "light romantic novels".

There's a mole, alive and lively, in my garden. It is digging under the lawn, now the frost has gone. It can dig more easily where someone has already loosened the ground for an oil pipe and an electric cable. There are three new mole hills in a row. There is no snow today, but I spotted snowdrops in a neighbour's garden and in the hedge. There's a problem with another neighbour's hedge, by a public footpath. Stones are falling out and there is a huge hole under the roots of a tall tree. This is not a mole hole!

An eborn nos o cler ha na veu ergh, keser na glaw, saw e'n mettin thera gwydn war an plansow ha'n pilyow gòdhor. Rew! The night sky was clear and there was no snow, hail or rain, but in the morning there was white on the plants and the mole hills. Frost! Are the moles warm enough under the ground? You can see footprints on the grass - they are mine. I walked with the dog. The sun is very low in this month. The shadows are very long. The frost didn't affect my two pinetrees, but the unlucky camellia is not happy - the flowers are turning brown.

En termyn eus passyes thera dhebm lies best dov. Otta onan anodhans, "Flerys" y hanow! Da o ganjo gwary e'n lowarth hag omgüdha et agan canou. Flerys o ficher albino (heb liw). Thera dhodho diw wreg (na ellama remembra aga henwyn). Liwys o anjei, melyn ha gell, pecar'a yewgednes.

Once upon a time I had many pets. Here's one of them, by the name of "Stinker"! He liked to play in the garden and hide in our canoe. Stinker was an albino ferret (without colour). He had two wives (I can't remember their names). They were coloured, yellow and brown, like polecats.
