There's an old saying in English about the cuckoo. "In April, come she will. Then, in May, she'll sing all day." Unfortunately, there are no cuckoos any more, it seems to me. However, there are still plenty of flowers named after cuckoos. Here are bluebells by the church. But these are not the only flowers with that name. Here is Lady's Smock; this will come later. Cuckoo-pint will be later as well. Meanwhile, in the hedges, there is plenty of ramsons, with their distinctive smell. And here's a lilac, with a beautiful perfume, growing wild.

Today's one more international day, World Book Day. Why today? Two of the greatest writers died on this day in 1616. Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra wrote "The ingenious gentleman, Don Quixote of La Mancha". This is a Spanish novel in two volumes. It is considered a very influential literary work from the Spanish Golden Age. The hero is a chivalrous old gentleman. William Shakespeare died on the same day. He did not write novels. He wrote many plays and poetry. He has some words about old men! "Men are April when they woo, December when they wed."

It's the day today to think about the Earth. It's an international day, Earth Day. Every kingdom and republic in the world should be thinking of the Earth. It began in 1970, but it hasn't cured anything yet. The Earth is poorly. There are still too many greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The climate is continuing to change. There is a climate crisis. There is desertification in some places, flooding in some other place. More storms, more drought, more crop failure, more wild fire. The oceans are still full of plastic and other rubbish, choking every living thing in them. Rivers and other fresh water sources are still being sullied. We are still poisoning ourselves. Forests are cut down. So, what can we do? Perhaps we can desist from burning fossil fuel, consumerism, waste, eating animals. We can plant more trees, and so much more.

How many birthdays do you have in one year? Only one! Our Queen is more fortunate. She has two birthdays a year. Her real birthday is today. She is ninety-five years old. But the Sovereign of Great Britain and the Commonwealth has an Official Birthday, too. That is in the summer, because the weather is better and it's possible to have public celebrations in the open air. Who was the first sovereign to have two birthdays? It was King George II. He had a real birthday in November, and the weather was always bad! So, how many birthdays has Queen Elisabeth enjoyed? About 160, I think! Her real birthday is usually private, but her official birthday is more spectacular - lots of soldiers and horses, cannons, aeroplanes. Will everything be quieter this year? She lost her husband not long ago, and we still have a pandemic.

Life is hard and boring sometimes, but it is brightened and enlivened by chatting with my friends. I hope to meet them in summer. I'm looking forward to going to our favourite café. Is it still there, after Covid lockdown? I'm also looking forward to viewing art exhibitions. What is there showing at Tate St Ives? Haegue Yang is extended till September. Perhaps I could go to Penzance. The Penlee Gallery has many pictures. They give a challenge every week. Be inspired this week by "The Fortune-Teller (The Wise Old Woman)" by Henry Meynell Rheam.
