The Latin names for willows is "Salix". I read that the word came from an old Celtic language to the Romans, and the meaning is "near water". Willows certainly like growing near rivers and streams. There are many wet places in Cornwall and place names with "willows" or "willow" in them. Sometimes there are willows in a "cove" - there is a stream on the beach in Porthallack (Willows Cove). Perhaps there was a ford in a stream in Retallack (Ford by Willow Trees), but now it is full of luxury summer holiday homes. And Heligan (Willow Tree) is a big house and a very famous "lost" garden.

Let's have a quiet walk. We have sunny weather, let's enjoy the warmth. There are flowers in every direction, with the gentle humming of bees and sometimes a fly. Is that a flower flying in the air? No. It's a white butterfly, and it settles on a white flower. It's disguised as a three-cornered leek! Can you see it in the big photo? I heard a sound behind a hedge - a noise like a rusty door hinge - a lonely cock pheasant. Then the afternoon was disturbed by an engine. Someone was racing a very noisy motorbike around the ploughed fields above.

Several years ago we had a very good bus service. We could take a bus two miles into Perranporth or ten miles into Truro. There was no bus stop but it was possible to stop a bus by sticking out your hand. The drivers were very kind. There was a bus every hour, even in the evening. Then the bus company became bankrupt and the service finished. Now I must walk to Perranporth to take a bus to Truro. And this big red bus? One a day for school and college students.

Today, the sea was greyer than the road. Finally the road was dry. The sun shone but the wind was still cold. We walked in the morning to the church. The churchyard is very pretty. We didn't say our daily prayers. The church was used as a place to vote. This month is very good for lilac. There's a wild lilac bush in the hedge, and in my garden too. But I saw a better lilac bush in a public garden in Truro. I had to go there for the dentist in the afternoon.

Happy May Day to one and all. The first day of May and the first day of Summer is midway between the spring equinox in March and the summer solstice (Midsummer) in June. The weather is beginning to become a bit warmer. The ground is drying out eventually and a tractor can drive on a field for ploughing without sinking. It's a splendid day for gulls and rooks. They follow the plough and look for invertebrates. It is not good for skylarks - their nests will be disturbed. It was not a good day for this dead buzzard - killed by electricity, perhaps.
