"Spring", did I utter that word? I was mistaken, misled by a pink camellia! There are ferns on the glass roof. But there is not a single green fern in the conservatory. These feathery leaves are made of frost. There was the first frost of the year last night. But the sky is blue and there is no wind. The frost does not last a long time.

Our Christmas tree is gone and all the decorations for Christmas as well. The twelve days of Christmas are ended. But we don't need decorations in the house. We can look at the garden. My camellia bush is thinking that it is spring already. There are no leaves on our neighbour's trees, nor on our young oak tree, so it is still winter. There are daffodils by the church, but I can't walk so far with the dog. My husband is ill. I need to be near the house.

I looked at the weather for tomorrow. In the morning, we won't have rain in Perranporth. My daughter in Truro will be dry too, but my son in Falmouth will be wet. Fortunately we are not all cold. From the year 1558 (Queen Elizabeth I) until 1829 (Roman Catholic Relief Act) members of the Church of Rome in England could not practice their religion openly. But they could sing the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas" with its hidden meanings. The tenth day (ten lords a-leaping) is the Ten Commandments. This was written in Cornish in about 1612. "Thou shalt have no other God but me."

This is the first day of a new year, but it is also the eighth day of Christmas. But I must think of the fifth, sixth and seventh day. What does the fifth day of Christmas mean? Five gold rings mean the first five books of the Old Testament. After that, six geese a-laying are the six days of the Creation (before the seventh day of rest). And seven swans a-swimming are the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit (prophesy, serving, teaching, exhortation, giving, leading and mercy).
