What is the connection between one tree and the Cornish language? This mulberry tree in London is five hundred years old, more or less. It was planted in the garden od Edmund Bonner, Bishop of London in the age of the Tudor dynasty. He helped King Henry VIII get a divorce from his first wife Catherine of Aragon. However, he didn’t agree to either Edward VI nor Elizabeth I as head of the church in England, hence he spent many years in prison. (He died in prison.) In the reign of Queen Mary I, he was called “Bloody Bonner”. He did not like Protestants and persecuted them as heretics. He was a cruel man. You can see the tree in the picture. But how is that connected with Cornwall? Bonner wrote many sermons or homilies to “encourage” the faithful. Tregear translated twelve of them into Cornish. “Homelyes XIII in Cornysche”.
Are there any mulberry trees in Cornwall? I don't know!

There are old gates, new gates, gates made of wood, gates made of iron, clean gates, rusty gates. In the surrounding countryside every gate is big. Traditional wooden gates have five horizontal bars – they are five-bar gates. Gates are heavy and strong, but they can fall. This gate was supported by the hedge, without a proper post. Now part of the hedge has gone with rain and wind and the gate has fallen. Sometimes a “gate” is seen in a place name or house name. “Gatenbans” was a gate in the hollow. What can I see through some gate or other? The sea is rough. The fields are ploughed and the machine is in a barn.

Alex is still with us – it’s windy. If there is wind, there are fallen things – branches and leaves torn from trees. A large proportion of the leaves – especially the big leaves - are still green but they couldn’t cling to their twigs. A big ivy bush is heavy – it brings down a small, dead, weak tree. Hawthorn leaves are small and yellow – and already gone. But there is more yellow in the flowers of this gorse bush – a flash of sunshine on a grey day. Wild plumtree leaves are also yellow. Sometimes it is necessary to cut off dangerous branches before they have a chance to fall. They shouldn’t damage houses or kill people.

Today was a day without taking any new photos myself. Storm Alex has come from France, with strong winds and rain. We were warned by the BBC. I can’t go out for fear of being wet and blown over. The wind is sighing around the house like a ghost. But I didn’t want to go out because there was a Skians webinar on the subject of Cornish language research. More than fifty people listened to talks from several countries. Meanwhile the sea was rough and the storm was lashing the coast. Oliver Padel spoke about the names in the freeing of slaves (m & f) from slavery in Bodmin more than a thousand years ago. Other people spoke about spelling, grammar, language revivals, all sorts of things, old and new.
