This
building was Bishop Phillpott’s Library in the 19th century.
Phillpott was Bishop of Exeter at a time when Cornwall was part of the Diocese
of Exeter. That was before the foundation of Truro Cathedral and before
Cornwall had its own bishop. it was built by a green with grass and trees. The
place was very pleasant, next to the river. The river is still here (almost - there is a boat on it),
but where is the green? It’s gone, buried by a bus station. There is still a
road, called Green Street.
