Do you like drawing? Or, perhaps, you have children or grandchildren. Could you draw clothes on these grandfathers? They need a shirt and neck tie, a coat and scarf, trousers and a belt, a smart hat. If there are no big things to celebrate, we must appreciate the little things in life. If there is neither man nor woman to hear us, we can talk to the animals, like St Piran! Hello, Mr. Llama! Are you lonely? Where’s your mate? And you, Mrs. Slug, you are not invited. That hole is just for the cats (though it was broken by a dog). You are ill-advised, indeed, to come here. You will dehydrate and shrivel. Slugs will eat toadstools. I would not try, though they look pretty. There is beauty in many things. Look at this stone in a field. Are those long white crystals of quartz?

Cornwall is world-famous for beaches and rugged cliffs. The seaboard is irregular, with many headlands, coastal clefts, small coves and big bays. Perhaps rougher are the uncontrolled inland moors. But the country isn’t all uncontrolled and irregular. Sometimes, on a cliff or a down you will see a regular shape, a perfect circle. There is a sundial in Perranporth – we can see the time (if there is any sun) – twenty minutes after London. In Penwith there is a circle of stones – the dance stones – perhaps 3000 or 4000 years older than the sundial. There are folks who still make circles. Sometimes they are a hoax. Are they made by aliens? These crop circles are reported in the news. Sometimes they are big. Fairy rings are smaller! They will not last three thousand years.

My trouser waistband is tight! Perhaps I ate too much – certainly I’ve had no chance to drink too much for ages. So, I walk out in the countryside every day. But I find other people disappointing. I love our hedges but to some people they are just a litter bin. There isn’t a fast food restaurant nearby but there is a McDonald’s nine miles from here. Nine miles is enough to swallow chips, burgers, etc., and then the packets are empty. Those people do not respect Cornwall, nor look after their own waists. Out of the window with the packets and cups and bottles. In summer the litter is hidden by bracken, but in autumn we see more. The bracken is cut. Litter louts should fast. There's litter by the church as well.

 My granddaughter likes to do art with me. Her mother brought some apples, beetroots and eggs from her hens. They are windfall apples and quite dirty from her garden. Apples are not the only things to be blown down. Why is this holly on the footpath? Because a big branch has fallen from a tree. I’m glad I wasn’t underneath. The poor holly tree was broken. Somebody cut the branch to clear the way. It’s difficult to walk in the lane and the fields as well. There were huge machines in the fields for the harvest and for bringing the manure heaps. The ground was wet and very soft and they had big wheels. As a result, they made deep ruts and high ridges. The season is autumn and there are lots of toadstools, but there are still many bright yellow corn marigolds.

There is lots of work for builders in Cornwall. People need good dwellings. Sometime they buy an old house. Perhaps the interior is behind the times. It could be in poor condition or dangerous. The rooms could be too small. The builders must pull out all sorts of things – a partition, plasterwork, old floorboards, a bath tub, perhaps a whole kitchen. Then, sometimes, there’s a need to rewire the house (for electricity). Rubble and rubbish can be taken away in a skip or big bags. However, from time to time it is better to take the whole house away and start again.

The village was quite empty yesterday. It wasn’t my choice to go there, but it was time for a flu jab. There was a row of cones in the road by the café. Customers could sit outside and there was still room for passing pedestrians. The beach was almost empty as well, so I was surprised to see beach guards still there. They will continue till the end of the month – there is an agreement between RNLI and Cornwall Council. Birds on the beach don’t notice the people. Were those gulls waiting for something? The tide was rising.  The little wagtail found a morsel to eat without waiting. Those are not bird footprints. There were horses here earlier.
