Sunday, 6th April

Pandr'ew an sawarn dhe les na? Üjy hei dhort an ke po dhort an gwel? Ma lies melyonen wydn, purpur ha blou, saw aga sawarn ew gwadn. Martesen ma câwgh war an gwel. Ma'n briny ow cavos neppeth pur dhe les. Na! An sawor ew haval dhe onyon. Ma flourys gwydn an kensa kenidnen drehornek.

What is that smell? Is it from the hedge or from the field? There are lots of white, purple and blue violets, but their scent is weak. Perhaps there is dung on the field. The crows are finding something very interesting. No! The smell is like onions. There are white flowers of the first three-cornered leek.

I love April. It's the most beautiful month, I think. Gone are winter's coldness and wetting, gone are the long nights. I am happy to see longer and brighter days. Winter is dark and grey. I love the colours in my garden. There's silver in a silver (white) birch and gold in a gorse bush (though the gorse bush is not in my garden). The blackthorn in the hedge is flowering, the plums will be next, beautiful white blossoms. There are tiny white flowers, too, the first wild strawberry plant. My granddaughter likes wild strawberries. Will there be fruits soon? There's a mole under the footpath. He can't see the beautiful flowers, sadly. He's blind. Is he cosy under the slab?

2025 Day 93

2025 Dedh Pajar Ugens ha Terdhek

De Yow, tryja mis Ebrel
Thursday, 3rd April

Ma othom dhebm a eryow für, geryow a fürneth. Ma trei anodhans en Jowan Chei an Horr (Nicholas Boson ca. 1667).
An trei foynt a skians ew:
Na wrewgh gara an vorr goth rag an vorr nowydh.
Na wrewgh whei ostya en chei lebma vo den coth demedhys dhe venyn yonk.
Bedhes gweskys diweth ken gweskel eneth.
My a drovyas nebes erel ewedh.

I need wise words, words of wisdom. There are three of them in John of the Ram's House.
The three points of wisdom are:
Do not leave the old way for the new way.
Don't lodge in a house where there is an old man married to a young woman.
Be struck twice before striking once.
I found some others too.

From dialect sayings of Joseph Thomas 1895:
A change of work is as good as a touch-pipe.
Chânjyans a whel ew maga da avel powes.
A clout is better than a hole out.
Clout ew gwell avel toll mes.
He who can't schemey must louster.
Ev na ell towla a res whesa.

clout = a piece of cloth or rag, a patch
louster = to do hard manual work, toil, sweat
schemey = to do brain work, scheme, plan
touch-pipe = a short interval for rest in the midst of work

From Wella Rowe (Bible translation Genesis 3:19):
By the sweat of thy face (brow) shalt thou eat thy bread
En whes dha godna tâl chy wra debry dha vara

Many years ago, more than sixty, I began working in a laboratory in a hospital in London. There I met a handsome Cornishman. He was a research technician, assistant to the director, and I was a technology student, with a work placement. We were married and, today, we have an anniversary. Our ruby red camellia is nineteen years old.

Happy April Fools' Day to everyone. Are you jokers? Have you made fun of someone this morning? Have you already seen any April Fools' Day tricks? Why is there a tradition of jokes on this day? I like tradition. Somebody found an old bit of traditional Cornish at Harvard University. It's in traditional graphs. It's an englyn, perhaps. This is not a joke.
