The last day of November and it's only 31 days till the last day of the year. Autumn has gone. Winter will start. There are still some scruffy toadstools left. There are leafless trees and evergreen trees, but some trees still have dead leaves. But what season is it? There are already long daffodil buds by the church and yellow gorse flowers in the hedge. Lent? Advent has only just begun!

I like this valley from Perranzabuloe to Perranporth. From the footpath to Perranwell I see Bolingey and part of Perranporth on the dunes. The sea is grey today. A little stream runs down the valley into the sea. It starts in a spring near St Piran's church. In the summer the stream dried up, bone dry, but we have had enough rain for it to run again. And the pond is filling again for ducks. Some old willows were felled – will they sprout out again? I will look with interest. Our lane won't flood again in the winter, there is a big pipe underneath from the pond. In past times there was a ford there, I'm sure. The little stream crosses several gardens, with little bridges or more pipes.

Matthew Peek didn't see a big beast on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, but he took a photo of a beast on a moor in Devon. It has a long tail like a cat. We need some snow. Then we could look for tracks. A mountain lion has big feet and it makes big tracks.

I won't write about bad news today. I would like to bring happy news. The Cornwall Heritage Trust has a new special place. This historic thirteenth century site was acquired from English Heritage. Where is it and what is it?  It is a mediaeval holy well and wayside cross. There is a well-house, possibly 15th century, like a porch, with carved pillars, arches and capitals. Probably, the well was used for baptisms. It was said that the water could cure lameness, blindness and insanity. It is all in St Cleer, near Liskeard. Is this man Saint Clarus?

Would you like to make a cake or scrambled eggs or pancakes? You need eggs. But there is a shortage of eggs in some shops. There are empty shelves in supermarkets. Why? There are many hens on many farms. But the cost of food for the birds is increasing and the farmers do not have enough money. There is not adequate payment from the supermarkets. The supermarkets make a profit but the farmers make a loss. Some farmers will no longer sell eggs to the supermarkets. Some of them will not get new hens, some of them slaughtered their birds earlier than usual. There are empty barns. We must pay more for our eggs. Some farmers have gone out of the business. Don't buy eggs in supermarkets. Buy your eggs from a farmers' market or by the farm gate.

Prices of everything are rising. There is a crisis with the cost of living. Do you like beer and pasties? Beef is three times more expensive. All the ingredients in everything are costing more. And most people don't have enough money to buy things. Several old pubs and popular pasty shops are closing. Sometimes owners are selling the building and sometimes bakers are retiring. At the same time "Gregg's" wants to open a new shop. Will they use cheap inferior beef for making cheap inferior pasties?

Their older brothers were Victorian! (There's too much silver in the photo, it is too dark.) They have white pinafores and black boots and their hair was curled. Who made the pinafores? Were they new? Their aunt was dressmaker to Queen Victoria. They were not dressed in white pinafores with white hairbands in curled hair every day! Why was the photo taken? Was the time the beginning of the Great War? Some of their brothers went off to fight. Today is my mother's birthday. Perhaps she is nine years old in the image.

Have you heard, sometimes we have earthquakes in Cornwall? The British Geological Survey makes measurements. In October two tremors were recorded 14km north west off Portreath. The depth was 16km, with magnitude 0.4 and 0.5 on the Richter scale. Before that there was a small shallow tremor near Devoran. The vibrations were not felt by people. However, in March the people of St Austell felt the ground shaking and heard a loud bang. There was geothermal drilling at Eden to the Porthtowan Fault Zone.
