Personal Activities 12 (preterite)

Here are some more examples of the simple past tense (preterite) to use for completed actions. All of these are regular verbs which use the verbal particle <a> (though in Late Cornish this is sometimes omitted) and end in <-as>.

brijyon> a vrijyas
(bryjyon > a vryjyas)
to boil > boiled
Me a vrijyas an tekel rag te.
(My a vryjyas an tekel rag te.)
I boiled the kettle for tea.

cana > a ganas
(kana > a ganas)
to sing> sang 
Me a ganas e’n tavern newher.    
(My a ganas e’n tavern nyhewer.)
I sang in the pub last night.

cawas > a gawas
(kavos > a gavas)
to find> found 
Me a gawas o lever dadn vord.         
(My a gavas ow lyver yn-dann voos.)
I found my book under a table.

kesclappya > a gesclappyas
(kesklappya > a gesklappyas)
to chat>chatted

Nei a gesclappyas oll an nos.

We chatted all night.

crejy > a grejas
(krysi > a grysas)
to believe > believed

Me a grejas an gwerther.

I believed the salesman.

desky > a dhescas

to learn > learnt

to clean > cleaned

whithra > whithras
(hwithra > a hwithras)
to investigate > investigated
Nei a whithras an prisyow war linen.
(Ni a hwithras an prisyow war linen.)
We investigated the prices on line.
