2024 Day 38

2024 Dedh Etek warn Ugens

  • Remember that the word dedh (SWFM dydh similar to Welsh dydd) for day mutates after an > an jedh!

  • Here are a few useful phrases using an jedh or a’n jedh

the appointed date an jedh apoyntys

that day an jedh-na

the daytime termyn an jedh

by day, in the daytime en termyn a’n jedh

during the day e’n termyn an jedh

(opposite, during the night e’n termyn an nos or  e’n termyn nos

Let’s try them in simple sentences:

e.g. An jedh apoyntys a dheuth rag agan metyans. The appointed date came for our meeting.

e.g. An jedh-na a veu specyal. That day was special.

e.g. Termyn an jedh ew gwell rag surfya. The daytime is best for surfing.

e.g. Nei ell cuntel flourys en termyn a’n jedh. We can pick flowers by day.

e.g. Ma rüdhek ow cana e’n termyn an jedh e'n ke. A robin is singing during the day in the hedge.

Position of the apostrophe doesn’t seem to matter as long as you only have one, either e’n or a’n but not both!

John Boson 1709 wrote

Ma Ladran moz en Termen Noz (there are thieves going during the night)
Reb vor Loundres Tur (by Tower of London road)

Here's his full advice to Arthur Hutchens, who was obviously going to London.
