The people in St Ives like to celebrate their saint, Ia or Eia. Ia’s saint’s day is 3rd February, but St Ives Feast Day, today, is 5th February. It celebrates the consecration of the parish church of St Eia in 1434 (590 years ago). There is a procession in the streets with a band. A silver hurling ball is blessed beside the well of St Ia. Then it is thrown to the big crowd of young people near the beach. They compete to keep the ball and take it back to the Guildhall for midday. “Fair play is good play.” The mayor gives pennies to small children, and throws more pennies for the bigger children.
